COLLEGE PARK, MD - After winning its third straight on Tuesday against Rider, Maryland opens Big Ten play on Friday night at Indiana in Assembly Hall. The game will tip at 7:00 PM and will be televised on BTN. Fans can listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche. Maryland is 6-3 all-time in Big Ten openers after last year's win over No. 16 Illinois at the XFINITY Center. This will mark the first time Maryland and Indiana have opened league play against each other.
Terps Open Big Ten Play
- Led by 22 points from Julian Reese and Jahmir Young, Maryland cruised to a 103-76 win over Rider on Tuesday night for its third straight win and 15th consecutive home win. The 103 points marked the first 100-point game since a 100-58 win over Wingate on Jan. 15, 2021 and was the most points since putting up 104 against Marshall in 2018.
- Against UMBC, Maryland scored 57 first half points marking the most in an opening stanza since the Terps also scored 57 against Longwood on Jan. 19, 2010. Since 1996-97, it marked the 13th time the Terps have put up 57+ points in an opening half. Against Rider, the Terps nearly matched that with 54 first half points.
- Defensively, Maryland is allowing just 62.7 points per game which ranks 35th nationally. The Terps have given up under 60 three times: Mount St. Mary's (53), Villanova (57), and South Alabama (55).
- Friday night will be the first game back in Assembly Hall for Jordan Geronimo who played three seasons for Indiana. The senior played in 82 games for the Hoosiers with six starts.
- Over the last three games for the Terps, Geronimo has been pivotal averaging 12.7 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the field while averaging 5.0 rebounds.
- In the win over Rider, he tied his career high with 15 points going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.
- On the year, Geronimo is averaging a career-best 7.1 points per game and 4.1 rebounds. He also has eight steals and four blocks while averaging a career-best 20.1 minutes per outing.
Fear The Jahmir
- After a standout season in 2022-23, Jahmir Young, one of the top point guards in the country, has racked up the preseason accolades. He has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 and is a member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as well. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019.
- Additionally, Young picked up Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon and Lindy's, while The Field of 68 had him on the All-Big Ten Preseason Team and ranked him as the No. 35 of 100 top players nationally entering 2023-24.
- Last season, Young was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the USBWA All-District Team, and selected to the NABC All-District Second Team. Additionally, he was chosen as the Pigskin Club of Washington Collegiate Player of the Year.
- Young is looking to become just the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions during his career. Prior to the the extra year of eligibity due to COVID-19, only three players had achieved the feat in the past 20 years. Young's 2,085 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA behind Max Abmas of Texas (2,653 pts).
Jahmir Young is a member of the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Bob Cousy Watch List, and was a unanimous pick to the preseason All-B1G Team.
JuJu Beast
- After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
- Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
- Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
- Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
- In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
- His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.
Julian Reese scored 22 points while pulling down 12 boards against Rider for his fourth double double of the year.
Great Scott!
- Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. Through seven games this year, he now has 1,392 points and 734 rebounds. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,300 points and 600 rebounds in a career.
- Darryl Morsell (1,090 points / 510 rebounds / 2018-21) and Anthony Cowan (1,881 points / 508 rebounds / 2017-20) were the most recent Terps to post 1,000/500.
- Scott is now 24th all-time in scoring and needs seven points to move past Dez Wells (1386, 2012-15) for 23rd. He needs 13 more boards to pass Maryland all-time great Len Bias (745, 1982-86) for No. 12 all-time.
- Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott (136 GP - t7th most, 121 GS - 6th most, 3962 MIN - 9th most) will have a chance to set Maryland's games played record (141, Jake Layman, 2012-16), the games started record (136, Steve Blake, 1999-03), and minutes played record (4568, Greivis Vasquez, 2006-10).
Donta Scott continues to climb the all-time record lists for the Terps.
