COLLEGE PARK, MD - After opening the 2023-24 campaign with a 68-53 win over Mount St. Mary's, Maryland turns its sights on Davidson to open up the Asheville Championship Tournament. The Terps will be looking for their 34th all-time regular-season tournament title after claiming last year's Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off with wins over Saint Louis and Miami. The game will tip at 7 PM and will be televised on ESPNU. Fans can also listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Brendan Hartlove calling the action alongside Chris Knoche. With its win on Tuesday night, Maryland has now won 47 straight home openers which is the third-longest streak in the nation. The win was also the 10th straight for season openers.
Terps Open Season With Win
- Against Mount St. Mary's, Julian Reese led the Terps with 18 points and eight rebounds. Jahmir Young and DeShawn Harris-Smith each added 12 points. Harris-Smith became the first true freshman to start for the Terps since Jalen Smith and Aaron Wiggins in 2018 and the seventh in the last decade to start a season opener.
- Maryland led by as many as 22 points in the game and shot just under 50 percent (24-of-49) with 40 of the 68 points coming in the paint. Defensively, it marked the second straight season giving up fewer than 55 points after surrendering just 49 points to Niagara last year.
DeShawn Harris-Smith became just the seventh true freshman in the last decade to start a season-opener for the Terps and the sixth since 1999 to score in double-figures.
Honors Stacking Up For YOung
- After a standout season in 2022-23, Jahmir Young, one of the top point guards in the country, has racked up the preseason accolades, He was named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List becoming the first since Anthony Cowan, Jr., in 2019. He is looking to become the first player since Greivis Vasquez in 2010 to win the honor. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019.
- Additionally, Young picked up Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon and Lindy's, while The Field of 68 had him on the All-Big Ten Preseason Team and ranked him as the No. 35 of 100 top players nationally entering 2023-24.
- Last season, Young was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the USBWA All-District Team, and selected to the NABC All-District Second Team. Additionally, he was chosen as the Pigskin Club of Washington Collegiate Player of the Year.
- Young is looking to become just the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions during his career. Prior to the the extra year of eligibity due to COVID-19, only three players had achieved the feat in the past 20 years. Young's 1,986 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA and he is closing in on becoming the 2nd active player to have 2,000-or-more career points (Max Abmas, Texas, 2574 pts).
Jahmir Young is a member of the Bob Cousy Watch List and was a unanimous pick to the preseason All-B1G Team.
JuJu Beast
- After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
- Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
- Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
- Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
- In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
- His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.

Don't Sleep On Donta
- Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. He enters the 2023-24 season with 1,329 points and 709 rebounds. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,300 points and 600 rebounds in a career.
- Darryl Morsell (1,090 points / 510 rebounds / 2018-21) and Anthony Cowan (1,881 points / 508 rebounds / 2017-20) were the most recent Terps to post 1,000/500.
- Scott is now 28th all-time in scoring and needs 25 points to move past Tony Massenburg (1354, 1985-90) for 27th. He needs six more boards to pass Albert King (715, 1977-81) for No. 14 all-time.
- Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott (130 GP, 115 GS, 3809 MIN.) will have a chance to set Maryland's games played record (141, Jake Layman, 2012-16), the games started record (136, Steve Blake, 1999-03), and minutes played record (4568, Greivis Vasquez, 2006-10).
Donta Scott continues to climb the all-time record lists for the Terps.
