No. 13 Maryland Returns Home For Midweek Matchup With Delaware

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland baseball returns to Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium for a midweek matchup against regional foe Delaware on Tuesday Feb. 28 at 4:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on B1G+ with updates available via @TerpsBaseball on Twitter.

 THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
The Matchup
  • Maryland welcomes regional opponent Delaware to Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium for it's second midweek matchup of the 2023 season on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Terps hold a 22-14-1 advantage all-time against the Blue Hens. The two teams last played on March 4, 2020 with Maryland claiming an 13-6 victory in College Park.
  • Maryland returns to College Park after taking 1-of-3 against the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi. Ian Petrutz and Jason Savacool led the Terps to a Friday night victory as Petrutz went 3-for-4 with his second grand slam of the season, two runs scored and four RBI. Savacool was dynamite on the mound striking out nine Ole Miss hitters in seven innings of work, giving up just one earned run and two runs overall.
  • The Terps dropped their home opener 8-6 to Big 12 opponent West Virginia on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Nick Lorusso and Luke Shliger both went 3-of-5 at the plate but it wasn't enough to power the Terps to victory.
  • The Terps opened 2023 with a series victory over South Florida in Tampa. The weekend was highlighted by three consecutive games with a grand slam for Maryland.
  • Delaware has opened 2023 with a 3-4 record, claiming 2-of-3 games against Stetson in their most recent weekend series.
  • The Blue Hens are currently being led by Redshirt Junior Joey Loynd who sits atop the roster with 10 hits and 14 RBI through seven games.

  • Maryland entered the 2023 season as a consensus top-25 program and the No. 13 team in the country according to D1Baseball.
  • Three Terps, Jason Savacool, Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger each earned preseason All American honors. The trio received recognition from D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball News. Shaw was also named a preseason All-American by Baseball America.
  • Juniors Luke Shliger (No. 1), Matt Shaw (No. 3) and Jason Savacool (No. 10) were each ranked in the Top-10 for their position by D1Baseball heading into the 2023 campaign.
  • Maryland comes into 2023 fresh off winning its first-ever Big Ten Championship in 2022 and first conference title in more than a half-century since the Terps won the ACC in 1971. Overall, it was Maryland's fifth conference crown.
  • The Terps return 15 players from last year's squad including six All-Big Ten honorees (Jason Savacool, Nick Lorusso, Matt ShawKevin KeisterLuke Shliger, and Nick Dean).
  • Maryland welcomes incoming transfers Matt Woods (Bryant), Elijah Lambros (South Carolina), Tommy Kane (Rowan), Eddie Hacopian (Cypress College) and Nate Haberthier (Ohio State), who all figure to make an immediate impact in College Park this season.

Meet the Coaches
  • Sixth-year Head Coach Rob Vaughn returns as skipper after last season's Big Ten Championship and receiving conference Coach of the Year honors. Vaughn is a career 141-96 (.595) as the Head Coach of the Terps.
  • Matt Swope and Anthony Papio return to the bench this year for Maryland, they bring a wealth of experience to the dugout as both Terrapin baseball alumni and veteran coaches on staff.
  • Mike Morrison returns as assistant for his second season with the Terps. Morrison joined the staff from Coastal Carolina, where won a national championship as a player in 2016 and spent two years as Director of Player Development and Scouting of the Chanticleers, as well as interim pitching coach.
  • Former Maryland baseball player Tommy Gardiner is back with the staff and serves as Director of Player Development after spending the four seasons playing under Vaughn, Swope, and Papio.
