No. 2 Notre Dame Wins Triple-OT Thriller Over No. 4 Terps, 13-12

COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a Top-5 showdown that lived up to the billing, Pat Kavanaugh scored in triple overtime to lift No. 2 Notre Dame past No. 4 Maryland, 13-12, before 6,001 fans at a sunny SECU Stadium on Saturday. The game was tied nine different times before Kavanaugh's winning goal. Maryland is now 3-2, while the Irish are 4-0. 

On offense, Owen Murphy (three goals), Eric Spanos (three goals), Jack Brennan (two goals), and Daniel Maltz (two goals) each had multiple goals for the Terps. Daniel Kelly and Zach Whittier (first-career goal) also scored. Maltz added two assists for four points, while Murphy also had four points with a helper. 

Kyle Long added three assists for the second week in a row, and freshman Braden Erksa had a career-high three assists. 

On defense, freshman goalie Brian Ruppel, making his second-career start, made 12 saves, including three crucial saves in overtime. 

At the face-off X, Luke Wierman won 20-of-31 for the Terps as he also scooped up eight groundballs. 

Notre Dame's Chris Kavanaugh had three goals. Quinn McCahon, Brian Tevlin, and Jack Simmons each scored two. 

This was Maryland's first triple-overtime game since beating Johns Hopkins, 8-7, on April 28, 2018. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Murphy had a hat trick in the first quarter as the Terps led 4-3 after the first 15 minutes. After Murphy opened the scoring, Notre Dame reeled off three goals in a row before the Terps regained the lead on two tallies by Murphy and one by Brennan. 
  • Notre Dame regained the lead at 5-4 with two goals in the first 1:20 of the second quarter as Tevlin's goal gave the Irish the lead again. The Terps were held off the scoreboard for the entire quarter – their first scoreless quarter this season – as Notre Dame led 5-4 at intermission. Maryland outshot the Irish 30-15 over the first 30 minutes. 
  • Just 50 seconds into the second half, Brennan evened the game with his second goal of the game off a feed from Erksa to tie the game at 5-5. Spanos gave the Terps a 6-5 lead 4:47 into the second half. The Irish tied the game on a tally by Eric Dobson just 22 seconds later at 7-6. Notre Dame extended to an 8-6 lead on consecutive goals by Jack Simmons with 6:23 left in the third. Spanos scored his second in the quarter to bring the Terps back within one at 8-7 with 5:35 left. Whittier tied the game at 8-8 with 4:42 left in the quarter with his first-career goal. The Terps continued a three-goal run with a Daniel Kelly score off a sweet feed from Long with three minutes left in the quarter as Maryland went ahead 9-8. The Terps held that one-goal lead into the fourth. 
  • The Irish tied the game 2:04 into the fourth quarter on a Chris Kavanaugh goal and took the lead back at 10-9 on Quinn McCahon's second of the day off a feed from Pat Kavanaugh with 11:49 left in the fourth. Spanos tied the game at 10-10 with 10 minutes left in the game – the eighth time the game was tied. Maltz gave the Terps the lead back at 11-10 with 8:48 remaining. Maltz scored again with 3:50 left for a 12-10 Terps' lead. The Irish got one back with 3:14 left, making it 12-11. Chris Kavanaugh tied the game for the ninth time at 12-12 with 1:56 left in the fourth. Neither team could score after that, and the game went to overtime. 
  • Ruppel made two huge saves in the first overtime as neither team could find the back of the net. In the second overtime, Ruppel again came up big with a save to keep the game scoreless and headed to a third extra session. Pat Kavanaugh scored the winner with 2:06 left in the third overtime. 
Hat Trick Terps
  • Maryland has had a hat trick in 62 straight games dating back to February 2, 2019.
  • Owen Murphy's first-quarter hat trick gave him 10 in his career and extended the streak. 
  • Eric Spanos had the first hat trick of his career with his third of the day in the fourth quarter. 
Multi-Terps Update
  • Murphy had his 10th career hat trick, 19th career multi-point game, and 15th multi-goal game. 
  • With three assists, Long had his 39th career multiple-point game of his career and 22nd career multi-assist game. 
  • With four points on two goals and two assists, Maltz had multiple points for the 28th time in his career and the sixth time with multiple assists. 
  • With two goals, Brennan had his 12th career game with multiple points and his sixth with multiple goals. 
  • Spanos had his first-ever multi-goal game. 
Record Book Update
  • Luke Wierman continues to stand fifth in career groundballs with 250. Next on the list at No. 4 is Jack Francis, with 263 from 1980-83. 
  • Wierman is also sixth in career face-off wins with 469. Next on the list at No. 5 is Charlie Raffa, with 498 from 2012-15. 
  • Kyle Long moved to 32nd in career points with three assists in the game to give him 129, passing Rennie Smith, who had 128 from 1952-55. Next in a tie for 30th are Pat O'Meally (1971-74) and Colin Heacock (2014-17) with 129. 
  • Long is now tied for 19th in career assists with 80, along with Brendan Hanley, who had 1985-88. In a tie for 17th are Frank Urso (1973-76) and Jim Wilkerson (1980-83).
