No. 4 Maryland Suffers 12-11 Loss To No. 7 Johns Hopkins In The Rivalry

COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a game that was tied at every score from 0 to 10 and featured eight lead changes, No. 7 Johns Hopkins beat No. 4 Maryland, 12-11, to capture The Rivalry and a share of the Big Ten Championship on Saturday night at SECU Stadium before 6,594 fans. 

Freshman Braden Erksa had a career-high five points on a career-high tying four goals with an assist.  Daniel Maltz also scored four goals. Daniel Kelly had a goal and assist for Maryland. The Terps' other goals came from Kyle Long and Nick Redd, who scored the first of his career. 

The Terps are now 8-4 overall and finished 3-2 in the Big Ten as Maryland will be the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will host No. 6 seed Rutgers next Saturday at SECU Stadium at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on BTN. 

Johns Hopkins moves to 11-4 and 4-1 in the Big Ten. The Blue Jays were led by Russell Melendez scored two goals including the game-winning goal with 3:51 left in the game.  Jacob Angelus had three goals and an assist. Garrett Degnon, Matt Collison and Johnathan Peshko also had two goals. 

Face-off man Luke Wierman won 13-of-27. He also scooped by eight groundballs including the 300th of his career, becoming just the third Terp to reach that plateau. With his eight groundballs, he recorded the second season with 100+ groundballs in Maryland history. He had 160 last season, second-most in Terrapin lore. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter as Maltz, Kelly and Long all scored for the Terps. Wierman won 5-of-6 draws in the period and scooped up his 300th groundball with five in the stanza. 
  • Hopkins scored two goals in 31 seconds to regain the lead at 4-3 with seven minutes left in the first half. Erksa scored back-to-back unassisted goals to put the Terps back up 5-4 with less than a minute left in the second quarter. The game was tied or within one goal for the entire first 30 minutes. 
  • Hopkins once again opened the third quarter with the first two goals to regain a lead at 6-5. Maryland scored two goals in 35 seconds as Redd tallied the first of his career on a full-field rush and score followed by Erksa's third of the evening. Degnon and Erksa traded goals as Maryland led 8-7 with 8:41 left. Then the Blue Jays ripped off back-to-back goals to take a 9-8 edge with 1:58 left in the quarter. After Maltz tied the game at 9-9, Hopkins scored with 14 seconds left in the third to but the Jays up 10-9 after 45 minutes. 
  • Maltz tied the game at 10-10 just 1:38 into the fourth quarter. Hopkins then took the first multi-goal lead of the game at 12-10 on Melendez no-look goal with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter. The Terps got back within one as Maltz scored his fourth of the game off a feed from Kelly with 54 seconds left. 
Multi-Terps Update
  • Erksa (four goals and one assist) had his ninth multi-point game and fifth multi-goal game of his inaugural college season.  He equaled his career high in goals with four - also done against Albany - as he had his third hat trick. 
  • Maltz (four goals) had his 21st multi-goal game of his career and seventh this year. He also has 32 career games with multiple points with eight this season. Maltz had his 14th career hat trick. 
  • Kelly (one goals, one assist) had his 10th multi-point game this season as he extended his goal-scoring streak and points streak to 12. 
Record Book Update
  • Wierman holds steady in second in career faceoff wins with 13, giving him 576 for his career. Andy Claxton holds the record with 648 from 1989-92. 
  • Wierman also holds steady at third in career groundballs with 307 after scooping eight in the game. Next up is Brian Haggerty, who had 380 from 1996-99.  Andy Claxton holds the record with 451 from 1989-92. 
  • Kyle Long is alone in 28th place in career points with a goal in the game to give him 141 points as he broke a tie with Brendan Hanley, who had 140 from 1985-88. Next on the list at No. 27 Mike Hynes (151 points from 1974-77). 
  • On the all-time goals list, Maltz is now tied for 26th at 27th, with 85. He passed Brian Willard (81 from 1984-87). He is tied No. 26 Jack Heim and his 85 goals from 1965-67. 
  • On the single-season lists, Wierman now has the sixth-most in a year with 191. On Saturday, he passed Brian Haggerty (181 in 1997), Andy Claxton (180 in 1992) and Claxton again (180 in 1990). Next up in a tie for No. 4 are Haggerty (194 in 1998) and Charlie Raffa (194 in 2014). 
  • He moved to ninth on the single-season list for groundballs with eight in the game to give him 104. He posted the 10th season in Maryland history with 100 groundballs. He passed Brian Haggerty's total of 100 in 1999.
