Terps Drop Road Match At Miami, 3-1

Box Score CORAL GABLES, FL — In a major early-season test, the University of Maryland volleyball team could not pick up a victory over former ACC rival Miami, dropping the Friday night contest 3-1 (13-25, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25) at the James L. Knight Sports Complex.

Senior pin hitter Samantha Schnitta was a key contributor for the Terps, notching 14 kills, while Laila Ivey, Eva Rohrbach and Sam Csire each accumulated eight kills. Additionally, freshman defensive specialist Jonna Spohn made her collegiate debut, picking up a pair of service aces and three digs.

In the Hurricanes' first match of the season, the 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier came out swinging with a .366 hitting percentage on the match. Miami opened the match with a .773 hitting percentage in the opening set, followed by a solid defensive front that accumulated six blocks in the second set.

Maryland competed hard in a strong third set, as the Terps held the advantage for a majority of the set. Midway through the set, Maryland went on a 4-0 run highlighted by four kills from four different Terps to create a 17-12 advantage for their largest lead of the set. After the Hurricanes battled back into the match, taking a brief lead late, a late Terrapin run clinched the third set for Maryland.

In the fourth set, Maryland sustained its momentum from the third-set victory, battling back and forth with the Hurricanes through the middle of the set. The Terps held the lead as late as 14-13 after an Angela Grieve service error, but a 6-0 run with a pair of Milana Moisio service aces gave Miami an advantage it would not relinquish. Maryland battled back late, drawing the game to within a score on the Hurricanes' final set point, but Miami prevailed in its season opener.

The Hurricane offense was an even effort as four players tallied double-digit kills, while the backcourt had three players with at least 10 digs.
