The Terrapins are coming off their third consecutive win on the season after a 1-0 win over Binghamton on Sunday, Sept. 10. The Terps got a PK from
Ava Morales, which she buried in the 82nd minute to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.

Series History - Penn State
- The Terrapins and the Nittany Lions have met on 19 prior occasions, with the Nittany Lions owning a 15-4 record all-time over the Terrapins.
- Since moving into the Big Ten, The Terrapins have played the Nittany Lions seven times without getting a win. The last time the Terps defeated Penn State was in 2004 in a 1-0 win in University Park in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
- Mallory Mahar scored a header in the 33rd minute to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the match. Mahar is tied for 14th all-time in goals scored in Terrapins' history with 18 and 15th in total points (47). Goalkeeper Nikki Resnick saved 10 shots in the 2004 win to help preserve the 1-0 lead. Resnick is tied for second in program history in both saves (353) and shutouts (19).
Mallory Mahar scored the winning goal in Maryland's last victory over Penn State back in 2004. Mahar's goal came on a diving header in the 33rd minute to give the Terps the 1-0 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the match.
Last Time Out
- The Terrapins got their third consecutive win on the season during Sunday's 1-0 over Binghamton. The Terps struggled in the first half, only able to get two total shots and were losing the possession battle 55-45. The momentum switched in the second half, with the Terrapins picking up 10 shots to Binghamton's three.
- The Terrapins created two clear chances by Maddie Krakower and Ava Morales that had to be saved by the Bearcats goalkeeper. Maryland continued to keep of the pressure throughout the second half.
- In the 82nd minute, the Terps put a ball in the box that was stopped by the hand of a Bearcats defender and led to a penalty kick for the Terrapins. Ava Morales stepped to the spot and calmly put the ball in the back of the net to give the Terps the 1-0 lead that they would hold onto for the win.
- This was the third consecutive win for the Terps heading into Big Ten play. The Terps haven't won three consecutive games heading into conference play since 2017.
Bagging Goals
- Midfielder Ava Morales has scored a goal in three consecutive games for the Terrapins. This is the first time a Maryland women's soccer player has scored in three consecutive games since Chelsea Jackson in 2016.
- Morales' 82nd minute penalty kick goal gave the Terrapins a 1-0 win over Binghamton on Sunday. Morales also scored the game-winning goal in Maryland's 1-0 win over Towson on Sept. 3. Morales dragged her effort by the keeper in the 52nd minute for the 1-0 that they would hold onto for the rest of the match.
- Â Morales' other goal on this streak was in Maryland's 2-0 win over George Mason. Morales scored a long shot that flew into the top right corner of goal just out of the reach of the goalkeeper.
- Morales now leads the Terrapins with three goals and six points so far this season. In her two years in College Park, Morales has scored five career goals.
Morales has been on a run for the Terps in the last three games. Morales has scored a goal in her last three games, which hasn't hapened for a Maryland player since Chelseas Jackson back in 2016.
Lockdown in Luddy
- The Terrapins are on a four-game streak where they haven't allowed a goal. Going into Big Ten play, the Terrapins have not allowed a goal in 378 minutes. The last time the Terrapins have had a shutout streak of four games or longer was in 2011, when the Terps began the season with six consecutive shutouts.
- A big part of this streak has been transfer goalkeeper Liz Beardsley, who has five shutouts so far this season in front of goal. The last Maryland goalkeeper to have five shutouts in a season was Rachel Egyed back in 2017.
Liz Beardsley has been key to the Terps recent four game shutout streak. In addition to this streak, Beardsley has five shutouts in goal this seasons for the Terrapins. This is the first time a Terrapins goalkeeper has had five shutouts in a single season since 2017.
Veteran Experience Throughout Squad
- To pair with its young roster, Maryland has multiple players with ample Division I experience to help bring these players along.
- The Terps have eight players with over 1,500 minutes in their careers with four of those players having played over 2,700 minutes.
- UMBC transfer defender Caroline Koutsos has the high water mark having played in 5,505 minutes in her career. Koutsos has played and started in 63 matches in her career. Eden White, another transfer defender, has played in 3,630 minutes in her career and has started 43 games. Catherine DeRosa has spent her entire career in College Park, having started in a total of 36 matches and amassed 3,269 minutes played. Kat Parris is a transfer forward from Radford who has played in over 2700 minutes and has started in 40 games in her career.
- The composition of this squad creates a roster with a unique blend of youthful exuberance and veteran leadership.
UMBC transfer
Caroline Koutsos has a wealth of Division I experience. Koutsos has played and started in 64Â matches in her career and brings her veteran experience into a side that is working in a lot of talented youngsters.
Scouting the Nittany Lions
- The Nittany Lions come into Big Ten play with a 6-0-1 record and are the No.6-ranked team in the nation. The Nittany Lions have rattled off six straight wins after a season-opening draw with No. 2 North Carolina.
- Olivia Borgen and Mieke Schiemann lead the Nittany Lions with three goals each on the season. Payton Linnehan and Kate Wiesner lead the team with three assists each, while Linnehan also leads the team with 7 points on the year (2 goals, 3 assists).
- In goal, Penn State is led by Katherine Asman who has 23 and a .958 save percentage. Asman has only allowed 1 goal on the season and has a GAA of 0.17 on the season. Asman's 0.17 GAA is the second-lowest in the Big Ten and the seventh-lowest in the nation.
Changing the Field
- Women's soccer midfielder Ava Morales is using NIL to make the game a much more inclusive space. Morales has partnered with Degree to help promote inclusion in the women's game for women and girls of all colors.
- Morales helped create a video posted to social media, that talked about her experience as a mixed-race and smaller player, and how she was over looked by many programs.
- Through this partnership, Morales hopes that many women of color understand that they can achieve anything in the game of soccer, and to not allow anyone to make them feel less them or deter them from achieving their dreams because of their race or heritage.
Terp of the Week
- Midfielder Ava Morales was named the Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week after her two goal performance last week.
- Morales is the second Terrapin women's soccer player to be named Terp of the Week, after goalkeeper Liz Beardsley received the first honor of the 2023-24 athletic year.
Ava Morales leads the Terps this year with three goals. Her recent form this past week allowed her to be named Terp of the Week, becoming the second women's soccer player to receive the honor this season
