Terps Fall In Four Sets To No. 19 Purdue

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD — The University of Maryland volleyball team (10-3, 1-0 B1G) fell to the No. 19 Purdue Boilermakers, 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 11-25) in an exciting Friday night matchup at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Terps put up a commendable fight against a talented Purdue team in Maryland's Big Ten home opener and first ranked matchup of the season.

Despite surrendering the first two sets, the Terps stayed competitive with this nationally-ranked Boilermakers squad, staying within two points for most of the opening two sets. The teams went back-and-forth for much of the first set, powered by four kills from Laila Ivey and three kills from Anastasia Russ, though 5-2 run midway through the first frame gave Purdue the edge for the rest of the set.

The lead changed six times in the second set, as the two Big Ten squads dueled back and forth. Senior pin hitter Samantha Schnitta subbed on and ignited an impressive attack effort, notching three kills in the final moments of the set that put Maryland up 22-21. However, a late 4-1 run from the Boilermakers powered by solo block from Raven Colvin to give Purdue the lead, 23-22, and a kill three points later gave Purdue a 2-0 lead.

The resilient Terps stormed back for a dominant third set, which resulted in an eight-point victory. Maryland hit .371 in the stanza, as Schnitta tallied eight kills by herself, enabling Maryland to hold the lead for the entire third set.

Purdue answered in the fourth set with a number of commanding runs of their own, opening with an 8-0 run and holding the set lead through until the close, sealing the four-set victory.

Schnitta was the standout for the Terps in this match, tying her season-high kill total with 16 and a .333 hit percentage. The Ole Miss transfer demonstrated great confidence and composure in her first Big Ten volleyball match.

Sam Csire and Laila Ivey also contributed on the attacking end for Maryland, recording 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
