Box Score EVANSTON, IL – The Terps put forth a valiant effort but were defeated by Northwestern, 72-69 on Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Neither team led by more than two possessions for the entire game and there were 11 lead changes throughout.
Maryland (11-7, 3-4 B1G) was led by Jahmir Young, who battled Boo Buie as the only two players in the Big Ten responsible for at least 30% of their team's assists and 25% of their squad's scoring. Young outplayed Buie, tallying 36 points and five assists during the contest, but his squad was unable to come away with the win. Young scored 28 of his points in the second half.
Young's 36 points were the most by a Terp in a conference game since Diamond Stone tallied 39 vs. Penn State on Dec. 30, 2015.
Young connected on back-to-back layups under two minutes to tie the game. He later drilled a 3-pointer to give the Terps a one-point lead, but Boo Buie raced down the court and made a layup to take a 68-67 lead with 20 seconds left. Both teams traded trips to the foul line, but Northwestern came away with the victory.
Jordan Geronimo trailed Young as the second-leading scorer for Maryland. He recorded 12 points and knocked down 2-of-3 3-pointers.
Donta Scott added 11 points and 3-of-6 threes.
Northwestern (13-4, 4-2 B1G) was led by Buie and Brooks Barnhizer, who combined for 35 points with Buie finishing with 20 points - including six points in the final 2:18 to clinch the win.
Breaking Down the Action
- At the first media timeout, Maryland trailed 14-12. Donta Scott drilled a 3-pointer coming out of the timeout to change the lead for the fourth time early in the game.
- Maryland would trail again at the under-eight timeout, but back-to-back by Julian Reese would give the Terps a 21-18 lead.
- A back-and-forth finish to the first half would see the Terps trail by four at the half, 32-28, with Scott and Young leading the Terps with nine and eight points respectively. Scott was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first half to lead Maryland.
- After halftime, Jordan Geronimo added a layup on a putback, then Jahmir Young forced a turnover and got another layup to even the game at 39 apiece at the under-16 timeout.
- Young led the Terps as they cut it to a 52-50 game with 7:51 to go after a jumper by Jordan Geronimo.
- Both teams continued to trade baskets, as threes by Geronimo and Northwestern's Ty Berry made it 62-57 with under four minutes to go.

"The way we're playing on the road with consistent effort against a team that obviously beat Purdue here, very tough place to play, place got loud," Kevin Willard said regarding the narrow defeat. "We gave ourselves a chance and that's what you have to do."
Double-Figure Factors
- Jahmir Young (36 points) dropped double-figures for the 122nd time in his career and the 16th time in 17 games he's played this season. It's also the 13th game in a row that he's played and scored double-digits. It was his 10th 20-plus point game and second 30-point game of the season
- Donta Scott (11 points) tallied double-figures for the 74th time in his career and the ninth time this season.
- Jordan Geronimo (12 points) scored in double-figures for the 13th time in his career and for the fourth time so far this season - his first season with Maryland. It was his high for points in a conference game this season.
- Julian Reese (10 points) had the 43rd double-figure game of his career, with the junior doing so for the 14th time this season.

- With 36 points in the game, Jahmir Young added to his career scoring total and now has 2,328 points. He is the second-leading active scorer in the nation behind Texas' Max Abmas (2,850).
- Young is the only active player in the nation with 2,000+ points, 600+ rebounds and 400 assists as he has 2,328 points, 691 rebounds and 435 assists.
- Young now has 907 points in his second season at Maryland. He is closing in on being the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions.
- He scored 20 or more points for the 10th time this season and the sixth time in seven games.

- Scott grabbed two rebounds to increase his career total to 792. He is four shy of passing Al Bunge for No. 9 all-time, who had 795 boards from 1957-60.
- Scott is closing in on becoming the fifth Terp all-time to reach 1,500 points and 800 rebounds.
- Scott is 7th in career 3-pointers made. With three in the game today, he now has 188 for his career to pass Johnny Rhodes (1992-96), who made 186. Next on the list is Eric Hayes who made 196 three-pointers from 2006-10.
- Scott played in his 147th career game as a Terp to add to his all-time school record for games played. Scott also started his 132st career game which ranks second most in program history. The school record is 136 by Steve Blake (1999-2003).
