Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – With the help of several key performers, Maryland volleyball defeated Michigan State (25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22) on Thursday at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
The Terps (11-13, 2-11 Big Ten) and Spartans (8-16, 1-12) split the first two sets. However, Maryland rallied in sets three and four. As a team, Maryland recorded 31 blocks, which is the most against a Big Ten team this season.
Freshman Katie Scherer recorded a career-day by posting a career high 10 kills, four blocks and three digs. Sophomore
Eva Rohrbach added 10 blocks and seven kills. Her block total is a career best in conference play.
Samantha Schnitta made her usual offensive impact. She tallied 14 kills, nine digs, five assists (career-high) and three service aces. She now has 64 aces on the season, adding to her total which ranks first in the NCAA and third in single season program history.
Sam Csire recorded eight kills, five digs and three blocks. She also moved into fourth place in program history for career kills. She passed Lynnsy Jones (2000-03) and Jade Brown (2004-07) and now has 1395 career kills.
Other standouts were Sydney Dowler (five kills, 16 assists and eight blocks),
Zoe Huang (18 assists and eight digs) and
Anastasia Russ (seven kills and five blocks).
The match was Military Appreciation Night. Terps Volleyball recognized those who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces.
Breaking Down The Action
Set 1: Maryland 25 Michigan 17
- Eva Rohrbach and Samantha Schnitta blocked Michigan State, and Schnitta followed that with two aces to lead the Terps 5-2.
- Sydney Dowler puts the ball over in two on a setter dump at 9-5.
- Maryland leads 15-8 after Dowler blocked the Spartans.
- At 18-9, Rohrbach hit a massive kill off a slide attack from Dowler.
- Schnitta records another kill on the right side at 22-13.

- Katie Scherer recorded her fourth kill of the game to kick set two off with Michigan State leading 3-2.
- Schnitta put the Terps within five, at 12-7, with a huge back row attack.
- At 18-17 Sam Csire records back-to-back kills.
- Maryland lost the second set after Michigans State middle recorded a kill.
Set 3: Maryland 25 Michigan 18
- Scherer recorded a kill on the outside to open set three 2-1.
- An ace by Schnitta put Maryland up 9-2.
- Michigan State went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to one.
- The Spartans facilitated another run of 5-0 and took a 14-12 advantage.
- Maryland responded with a 6 point run of their own to take a 18-15 lead.
- Scherer closes set three with a kill, finishing the set 25-17.
Set 4: Maryland 25 Michigan 22
- Scherer tied the score 3-3 to kick set four off.
- Anastasia Russ and Dowler with a back-to-back block on Michigan State's outside, to lead by two at 10-8.
- Schnitta tied the score 15-15 with a kill set by Lilly Gunter.
- A huge solo block by Dowler retained Maryland's lead 19-17.
- Maryland leads 24-22 following huge block by Russ and Scherer.
- Maryland closes the set out 25-22.
