No. 5 Terps Trounce Drexel In Home Opener, 14-7

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 5 Maryland women's lacrosse trounced Drexel, 14-7, in its season home opener on Wednesday at the Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse Complex. Maryland has won nine of 10 home openers since joining the Big Ten. Eloise Clevenger scored a game-high six points and recorded a hat trick.   
  Maryland (3-0) had its way on offense and defense throughout the contest. Five Terps scored multiple points and four scored multiple goals. Hannah Leubecker, Maggie Weisman and Victoria Hensh each scored twice in the contest. For Weisman, it marked the first two goals of her career. 
  The Terps' defense held Drexel to long-scoring droughts and its offense facilitated long-scoring runs, including six unanswered goals to begin the game. 

Goalie Emily Sterling turned away nine shots and moved into fifth place on Maryland's career saves list. 

  Shaylan Ahearn was dominant with nine draw controls. She added to her career total which ranks third in program history.  

Drexel's (2-2) goal scorers were Alex Wall, Bea Buckley, Anna Maria Gragnani, Kate Marano and Maddie Fowler. Wall scored three times for the fifth hat trick of her career.

  Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland scored six goals in the opening quarter and Drexel cashed in one in the final seconds despite having only two shots on the goal. Hannah Leubecker and Eloise Clevenger each scored twice and Shannon Smith and Maggie Weisman added one each. 
  • Drexel added another goal early, but Maryland responded with unassisted goals from Jaylen Rosga and Victoria Hensh to lead 8-2 at halftime. Maryland outshot Drexel 20-8 and had more goals (8) than Drexel had shots on goal (6). 
  • Maryland poured in five more goals in the third quarter, each scored by a different player. Drexel scored twice in the period, but the Terps had a commanding 13-4 lead going into the final 15 minutes. 
  • Drexel scored three goals in the final quarter to Maryland's one from Kate Sites. The Terps won comfortably 14-7.  
Hat Trick Terps 
  • Eloise Clevenger notched a hat trick with three goals to go along with three assists. It was the ninth hat trick of her career. She was the third Terp to score three goals in a game after Hannah Leubecker and Kori Edmondson did in their overtime win against No. 5 Syracuse. 
Multi Terps Update
  • Eloise Clevenger (three goals & three assists) had the 36th multi-point game of her career. It was her 23rd career game with multiple assists and 15th career game with three assists. 
  • Hannah Leubecker (two goals) notched her 48th career multi-point game and 46th multi-goal game. 
  • Maggie Weisman (two goals) notched the first multi-point scoring game of her career.
  • Victoria Hensh (two goals) tallied the 10th multi-point scoring game of her career and the eighth with multiple goals. 
  • Libby May (one goal & one assist) recorded the 54th multi-point game of her career. 
Terps On The Charts 
  • Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 338 draw controls. She added to her total with nine on Wednesday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career. 
  • Emily Sterling is fifth in career saves after her nine in the game. She has 524 in her career and passed Denise Wescott (1978-80). She's also only 27 from passing Kim Chorosiewski (1985-88). 
  • Eloise Clevenger moved up on the all-time assists list. She had three in the game and has 94 in her career, which is ninth in program history. She's also eight away from passing Kelly Kasper (2005-08) to claim the eighth spot. 
  • Libby May and Hannah Leubecker are No. 13 and 14 respectively on the career goals list. May has 172 and Leubecker has 169. Both are nearing Zoe Stukenberg's (2014-17) position at 12th on the list.

  • 1: Maggie Weisman scored the first goal of her career. She scored two overall in the contest.
  • 1: Eloise Clevenger, Victoria Hensh and Kate Sites scored their first goals of the season. 
  • 3: Maryland is undefeated in three all-time meetings with Drexel.
