Maryland Set To Host No. 16 Florida On Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 5 Maryland remains home for a Top 25 matchup with No. 16 Florida on Saturday. The game will begin at 11:00 a.m. and air on B1G+.
 
Where we are
  • Maryland enters the weekend ranked No. 5 after starting its season 3-0. Most recently, the Terps took down Drexel, 14-7, in their home opener. Eloise Clevenger led Maryland with six points, from three goals and three assists. 
  • The 2024 schedule consists of ten non-conference and six conference matchups. The Terps continue to schedule strong competition with nine opponents ranked in the IWLCA Preseason Top 25.
  • The Terps are coming off a season where they earned their 33rd consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Maryland finished the 2023 season 15-7 overall and with a 4-2 conference record. 
  • Maryland recently announced six of its games will be broadcast nationally. Five games will air on Big Ten Network, including three home contests and one will show on ESPNU.

Championship facility
  • The Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex completed renovations this fall, achieving a comprehensive enhancement of the facility transforming the existing 5,500 square foot facility into a 17,193 square foot team house.
  • The facility features larger, separated locker rooms for Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse student-athletes with spacious team rooms with all-new technologies, an increased Sports Medicine room with new rehabilitative and recovery equipment, inclusive of hydrotherapy space, a signature lobby to recognize and celebrate the championships and success of both programs, a relocated fan entrance for ease of access to the complex seating areas and a second floor addition with coaching offices and meeting spaces.
2024 Captains
  • Maryland has selected veterans Shaylan Ahearn and Emily Sterling and senior Eloise Clevenger as its 2024 captains. 
  • The 2023 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, Shay Ahearn leads the Terps with 321 career draw controls, the fourth most in program history. Ahearn was a third team Inside Lacrosse All-American, a first team All-Big Ten selection and five-time Big Ten Midfielder of the Week during the 2023 season.
  • The 2022 IWLCA National Goaltender of the Year, Emily Sterling brings a veteran presence in goal for the Terps. She earned Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the second consecutive year following the 2023 season. Sterling finished the season with a 9.60 goals-against average and .474 save percentage.
  • Eloise Clevenger finished the 2023 season first in the Big Ten and eighth in the nation with 47 assists. She was recognized as IWLCA Third Team All-American and First Team All-Region, First Team All-Big Ten and Inside Lacrosse & USA Lacrosse Magazine Honorable Mention All-American.

New Additions
  • Reese and the Terps added two of the top transfers out of the portal for the 2024 season in 2023 Big Ten Defender of the Year Meghan Ball and Colorado stand-out Sophie Halus. Ball, a graduate transfer from Rutgers, was the first non-Maryland player to earn Defender of the Year. In addition, she is a three-time IWLCA All-American, three-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and she graduated as Rutgers' all-time leader in career caused turnovers (154) and draw controls (308).
  • Halus, a junior, started all 36 contests in her first two seasons with the Buffaloes. She tallied 40 ground balls, 32 caused turnovers, one goal and three assists.
  • Maryland also welcomes an impressive freshmen class, highlighted by top-10 ranked signee Maisy Clevenger. The class also features ranked signees JJ Suriano and Lexi Dupcak, alongside watchlist talent Lauren LaPointe.

Dominance Under Reese
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese enters her 18th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 320-41 as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Maryland is 168-6 at home under Reese, with eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '21).

History vs. Florida
  • This will be the tenth all-time meeting between Maryland and Florida, with the Terps and Gators meeting for six-straight seasons from 2015-20 and twice in 2022.
  • The Terps own a 4-1 record over the Gators in College Park. Maryland earned their largest victory in matchup history, 18-5, during the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2022 paving its way to 12th final four in 13 seasons. 
  • The last time these programs met, No. 6 Maryland took a dramatic 14-13 win at No. 7 Florida. Victoria Hensh scored with 17 seconds left in regulation to give Maryland the lead. She scored three of her career-best four goals in the decisive fourth quarter as the Terps rallied from a 10-8 deficit in the fourth quarter.
