COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball is back in action this week, as it takes on both Georgetown and VCU in midweek contests. The Terrapins will host the Hoyas on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The game will be streamed on B1G+. *
Due to inclement weather, the game against Georgetown has been moved to 2 PM
The Terrapins will travel to Richmond, Virginia to face the Rams at The Diamond on Feb. 28. First pitch is slated for 3 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+. Both games will also be available on the Maryland Baseball Network.
This will be the 86th meeting all-time between the Terrapins and the Hoyas, with the Terps holding a 62-23 overall record against the Hoyas. The teams last met on April 26, 2023, where the Terps picked up a 16-3 victory in seven innings.
The Terps hold a 25-28 record all-time against the Rams, with the Terps having won the last four meetings between the two teams. The last game between the opponents took place on March 8, 2022, with the Terps coming out on top 8-6
Maryland defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 7-5 on Feb. 23, led by a four RBI performance from
Sam Hojnar. Hojnar would equal that four RBI performance with another in Maryland's 10-4 win over the Pitt Panthers. Hojnar was joined by
Chris Hacopian, who slugged his second home run of the year and drove in three runs. The Terps would drop their final game of the weekend against Washington 6-5, with Washington scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Georgetown (3-4) won two out of three during the weekend against VMI. After dropping the first 12-1, Georgetown picked up consecutive wins over VMI by a score of 8-1 and 8-5. Jake Hyde leads the Hoyas offensively, with the senior leading the team with two home runs and 10 RBI, while hitting for a .281 batting average. Cody Jensen led the Hoyas on the mound last week, going five and a third innings over two appearances. Jensen allowed just five hits and one earned run, while striking out four across those two appearances.
VCU (4-3) enters the Wednesday match-up having taken two of three from Merrimack College. The Rams won the first game of the series 12-3, before dropping the second game by a score of 16-12. The Rams would close out the series with a 7-5 victory. On offense the Rams are led by Brandon Eike, who is hitting for a .375 average with four home runs and 12 RBI. Maison Martinez leads the Rams with a 2-0 record this season, with nine strikeouts and only four hits allowed.
Ready Orr Not
- Junior Jacob Orr leads the Terps with a .429 average through seven games this season. Orr has one home run on the season and also has six RBI.
- On Opening Day, Orr hit a two-run homer to help start the comeback for the Terps. This marked the second consecutive opening day game where Orr hit a home run, with the junior hitting a home run in the season opener last year against USF.
- These home run in consecutive years on opening day makes Orr the first Terrapin to accomplish this feat in 25 years. Orr is also one of only three players in Division I that ahve homered on opening day in both 2023 and 2024. The other two players are Jonathan Vastine of Vanderbilt and Bryce Chance of Mississippi State.
Jacob Orr homered on opening day for the second year in a row back on Feb. 16 against Georgia Southern. Orr is the first Terp in 25 years to accomplish the feat,a nd is one of only three players in Division I to have homered on opening day in both 2023 and 2024
Hojnar Runs Wild in Texas
Sam Hojnar hit a home run and picked up four RBI in back-to-back for the Terps. Hojnar finished both game with four RBI and had extra base hits in both wins for the Terps at the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
Maryland Baseball: a Hacopian Family Tradition
- Three Hacopians have donned the Maryland uniform. Currently brothers Eddie and Chris feature for the Terps in 2024. The one to get it all started was the patriarch of the family, Derek. Derek Hacopian was the ACC Player of the Year in 1992 for the Terrapins
- Derek Hacopian held the single-season record for home runs for a Terp with 22, which he set in 1992. That record stood for 30 years, before Chris "Bubba" Alleyne in 2022. Hacopian hit for the triple crown in 1992, also finishing that year with 83 RBI (2nd most all-time in program history) and a .492 batting average (3rd all-time).
- Eddie Hacopian made his debut for the Terps during the 2023 season. He finished his first year in College Park with a .328 batting average, eight home runs and 49 RBI. Hacopian currently is currently second on the team with a .391 batting average and has 6 RBI tghorugh seven game this season.
- Chris Hacopian rounds out the list, as the freshman made his debut in the season-opener for the Terps on Friday. Chirs currently leads the Terrpains with two home runs through seven games in 2024, and is ied for the second-most RBI on the team with seven.
