Terps Open Final Home Week Against Wildcats
- Maryland leads the all-time series 12-5 and are 7-1 in College Park.
- Jahmir Young scored 36 points, including 28 in the second half, in a nip-and-tuck battle in Evanston that went to the Wildcats, 72-69. The game featured 11 lead changes. Maryland led 68-67 with 30 seconds to go, but Boo Buie hit a driving lay-up 10 seconds later to put Northwestern back ahead. The teams traded free throws through the balance with the Wildcats converting four straight in the three seconds to seal the win. Buie finished the game with 20 points and seven assists.
- Julian Reese notched 20 points and Jordan Geronimo posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as Maryland picked up a 63-46 road win at Rutgers on Sunday. The 46 points allowed matched the fewest allowed since giving up the same at Minnesota last year, while the 18 points surrendered in the first half were the fewest for a Big Ten road game since giving up just 14 at Michigan State in 2014 - Maryland's first game in the league.
- Maryland has two Quad 1 wins on the year, four Quad 2 wins, and has four road wins (2nd-best in the Big Ten). Despite being 2-8 in Quad 1 games, the Terps have had four decided by one possession or overtime (1-3).
- Defensively, Maryland has been outstanding allowing 70-or-fewer points in 15 of its last 19 games. The Terps have held the top five Big Ten scoring teams to an average of 21 points under their yearly average.
- Maryland allows opponents to shoot 37.4 percent from three-point range during the first half, but then holds them to 27.5 percent in the second. That 9.9 percent decrease is the largest among major conference teams. In the last four games, Maryland held Iowa to 1-of-9, Illinois to 0-for-8, Wisconsin to 2-of-12, and Rutgers to 2-of-5 from deep in the second half (5-of-34).
Playing in his home state,
Jordan Geronimo had his first Marylnad double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday.
Fear The Jahmir
Jahmir Young is a member of the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Bob Cousy Watch List, and was a unanimous pick to the preseason All-B1G Team.
JuJu Beast
- After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
- Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
- Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
- Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
- In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
- His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.
Julian Reese has a career-best 13 double-doubles this year. His 20 are the fourth most for a Terp career dating back to 2010-11.
Great Scott!
- Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. Through 28 games this year, he has 1,643 points and 843 rebounds becoming the 5th Terp all-time to post 1,500 points and 800 rebounds.
- Scott joins Lonny Baxter (1,858 & 998), Tom McMillen (1,807 & 859), Keith Booth (1,776 & 916) and Terence Morris (1,733 & 925) in this elite group of Terps.
- Scott is now 15th all-time in scoring and needs 16 points to move past Melo Trimble (1658, 2014-17) for 14th. He needs 17 more boards to pass Tom McMillen (859, 1971-74) for No. 8 all-time.
- Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott has set the games played (157), games started (141), and minutes played (4,638) records surpassing Juan Dixon/Jake Layman (141), Steve Blake (136), and Greivis Vasquez (4568), respectively.
Donta Scott set the all-time Games Started record for Maryland against Rutgers.
