COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse was defeated by No. 4 Virginia, 14-10, on Saturday at SECU Stadium before 7,845 fans. The Terps rallied back within one after facing a four-goal deficit early in the first half, but the Cavaliers held on despite the Terps' fight.

Maryland (5-2) was led on offense by Eric Spanos, Ryan Siracusa, Eric Malever and Daniel Kelly. Each player notched two goals, and Spanos added two assists to lead the team with four points. Braden Erksa and Daniel Maltz scored the other goals for the Terps.

Logan McNaney passed Jake Reed for fourth on Maryland's career saves list. He turned away eight shots and is closing in on 500 career saves. He has 482 in his five-year career.

Luke Wierman made his return and won 16-of-28 faceoffs to add to his program record. He also picked up a game-high 11 groundballs.

Virginia's (6-1) entered the game as the fifth-best scoring offense among Division I schools. It was held under its average of 16 points per game. Griffin Schultz scored four goals and notched two assists.

Eric Spanos scored two goals for Maryland. Sandwiched between the two was a goal from Virginia. The Cavaliers then scored three unanswered goals to lead 4-2 after one. Griffin Schultz scored twice for Virginia.
Virginia scored twice more to begin the second quarter, but Eric Malever ripped a shot past the goalie to halt the run. Daniel Kelly and Ryan Siracusa followed to make it three unanswered goals for the Terps. The Cavaliers led 7-5 at the break.
Maryland and Virginia traded goals up to the 7:48 mark of the third quarter. Each team scored twice. Braden Erksa scored his first goal and Siracusa notched his second. The Cavaliers ended the quarter with two goals to lead 11-7 entering the final quarter.
Daniel Maltz, Daniel Kelly and Malever scored within two minutes of one another to bridge the gap to 12-10 at 11:04. The Terps had momentum, but Virginia got a goal back to increase the lead to three goals.
Virginia added one final goal to put them ahead by four goals to seal the game.

Eric Spanos (two goals and two assists) had his 10th multi-point game of his career. It was his eighth multi-goal game of his career and second game of his career with multiple assists.
Ryan Siracusa (two goals) recorded the sixth multi-point game of his career. It was his third career game with multiple goals.
Eric Malever (two goals) had the 22nd multi-point game It was his 14th game with multiple goals.
Daniel Kelly (two goals) had his 14th multi-point game of his career and ninth game with two goals.

Terps In The Record Books

Luke Wierman became the program's all-time faceoff winner in the Terps' season opener. With 16 wins today, he added to his total of 731 for his career.
Wierman is one of only three Terps in history to scoop up 300 or more groundballs in a career. He picked up 11 and has 395 in his career. Wierman is chasing Andy Claxton (1989-92) who stands alone with 451 career groundballs.
Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With 10 in the game, he now has 484 for his career. He passed Jake Reed (479 from 1974-77) and is just 16 saves away from becoming the fourth Terp ever to reach 500 career saves.
Daniel Maltz scored one goal to increase his career total to 105. He sits at No. 15 on the all-time list. He's just three goals from passing Dave Dempsey (107 from 1970-74).
Maltz is No. 30 in career points with 139 behind No. 29 Brendan Hanley, who had 140 from 1985-88. Next up at No. 28 is Kyle Long, who had 149 points from 2019-23.
Ajax Zappitello tied Brett Makar for 13th on the all-time caused turnovers list with one on Saturday, giving him 59.
