No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Prepares For Georgetown

COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 2 Maryland remains on the road for a non-conference contest with Georgetown on Wednesday. The game will start at 4 p.m., and will stream live on FloSports.
 
Where we are
  • The No. 2 Terrapins rose one spot in the IWLCA rankings after earning their first conference win over Ohio State on Saturday. The Terps were led by Kori Edmondson and Hannah Leubecker who each tallied hat tricks and Eloise Clevenger with five assists. 
  • Maryland secured an impressive groundballs in the 12-6 win over the Buckeyes. Emily Sterling had three, followed by Sophie Halus and Brianna Lamoureux with two apiece.
  • The 2024 schedule consists of ten non-conference and six conference matchups. The Terps continued to schedule strong competition with nine opponents ranked in the IWLCA Preseason Top 25, including three of the four teams from the 2023 Final Four.
  • The Terps are coming off a season where they earned their 33rd consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Maryland finished the 2023 season 15-7 overall and with a 4-2 conference record. 
  • Maryland announced six of its games will be broadcast nationally. Five games will air on Big Ten Network, including three home contests and one will show on ESPNU.

Championship facility
  • The Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex completed renovations this fall, achieving a comprehensive enhancement of the facility transforming the existing 5,500 square foot facility into a 17,193 square foot team house.
  • The facility features larger, separated locker rooms for Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse student-athletes with spacious team rooms with all-new technologies, an increased Sports Medicine room with new rehabilitative and recovery equipment, inclusive of hydrotherapy space, a signature lobby to recognize and celebrate the championships and success of both programs, a relocated fan entrance for ease of access to the complex seating areas and a second floor addition with coaching offices and meeting spaces.
2024 standouts
  • Eloise Clevenger leads the team in assists (29) and points (40). She averages 3.62 assists per game, leading the Big Ten, and 5.00 points per game ranking third in the conference. Her assists per game average ranks third in the nation. 
  • Hannah Leubecker leads Maryland in scoring with 17 goals. She earned her third hat trick of the season against the Buckeyes. Kori Edmondson also tallied three goals on Saturday, adding to her season total of 15.
  • Shaylan Ahearn, Meghan Ball and Shannon Smith combine for 80 percent of the 113 team draw controls. Ahearn leads the team with 37 draw controls, and added a goal against the Buckeyes. 
  • Emily Sterling continues to be stellar as the last line of defense, posting the second-best save percentage in the country of .573 after eight games.
  • Clevenger, Leubecker, Sterling and Ball were each named to the Tewaaraton Watch List earlier this season.

  • The Terps have won 10 Big Ten titles (six regular season championships (2015-19, 22) & four tournament championships (2016-18, 22) and 31 conference championships in total, winning 21 in the ACC (10 Regular Season, 11 Tournament).
  • In nine seasons in the Big Ten (no 2020 due to COVID-19), Maryland is 46-7 in Big Ten regular season play and 59-10 overall including the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland has never lost a Big Ten home game and has gone undefeated in regular season Big Ten play in every season but 2021 and 2023. 
  • Maryland has won 15 Conference Tournament Championships in program history, with 10 of those coming since Cathy Reese became the head coach in 2007 (six ACC, four Big Ten). The Terps took home six-straight ACC titles from 2009-14 and three-straight B1G titles from 2016-18. Reese is 27-6 as the coach of Maryland in conference tournament games.
  • The Terps have won 24 Big Ten conference player of the year awards (four attacker, five midfielder, seven defender, six goalie, two freshman) in eight years in the conference. Cathy Reese has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year four times (2016-19).

Dominance Under Reese
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese enters her 18th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 324-42 as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Maryland is 169-7 at home under Reese, with eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '21).

History vs. Georgetown
  • The Terps lead the all-time series against Georgetown, 24-4 and have won 13 straight against the Hoyas dating back to 2007. Cathy Reese is a perfect 13-0 over Georgetown.
  • The last time these programs met, Maryland beat Georgetown, 13-4, behind eight points from Kori Edmondson and Shaylan Ahearn combined. Edmondson had a hat trick and an assist, while Ahearn had three feeds and a goal. Emily Sterling made an impressive 15 saves to finish the night with a .789 save percentage.
