No. 1 Terps Rally For 8-6 Win At No. 2 Michigan

Box Score ANN ARBOR, MI – No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse handed No. 2 Michigan its first loss of the season, defeating the Wolverines 8-6 at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday. The Terps picked up their fifth ranked win of the season and second over a No. 2-ranked team. The other win came against No. 2 James Madison on March 10. 
  Maryland (10-2, 3-0 B1G) trailed 4-2 at halftime after Michigan (11-1, 2-1 B1G) netted four unanswered goals and held the Terps scoreless for the entire second quarter. The Terps responded by outscoring the Wolverines 6-2 in the second half and holding them scoreless for the remaining 23:53. Hannah Leubecker's goal in the fourth quarter gave her team its first lead since the first quarter. She netted two goals in the contest. 
  Eloise Clevenger put the game away by padding the lead with her goal with 4:40 remaining in the game. She finished with her third hat trick of the season (three goals and one assist). Clevenger also claimed fourth place on Maryland's career assists list.  
  Maryland's defense remained strong throughout, but made key stops down the stretch. Michigan turned the ball over 15 times, including five in the fourth quarter alone. Emily Sterling made nine saves and became one of three Terps to record 600 saves in a career. Meghan Ball won seven draw controls, picked up a season high five groundballs and caused one turnover. Aiden Peduzzi and Sterling each caused one turnover. 
  Maryland has never lost to Michigan in 11 meetings.   


Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps struck first less than two minutes into the game with a goal by Shannon Smith. Victoria Hensh netted the other goal for Maryland as it was tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines scored their first goal with 2:21 remaining and added another in the final seconds. 
  • Michigan netted two goals in the second quarter while holding Maryland scoreless. The Wolverines led 4-2 and mounted its lead by scoring four unanswered goals.  
  • Maryland outscored Michigan 4-2 in the third quarter and entered the fourth tied at 6-6. Eloise Clevenger scored twice and Kate Sites and Hannah Leubecker each added one. 
  • Leubecker netted a goal early in the fourth to give Maryland a 7-6 lead. Clevenger put the game away with her third goal of the game with 4:40 remaining. 
Hat Trick Terps  Multi Terps Update
  • Eloise Clevenger (three goals and one assist) had the 45th multi-point game of her career. It was her 23rd with multiple goals.
  • Hannah Leubecker (two goals) notched her 55th career multi-point game and 53rd multi-goal game.
Terps On The Charts 
  • Emily Sterling is fourth on the career saves list and added nine in the game. She now has 607 in her career. She became one of three Terps to record 600 saves in a career. Third place is Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) with 720 career saves. 
  • Eloise Clevenger is fourth on the all-time assists list. She had one in the game and has 120 in her career. She broke a tie with Sarah Mollison (2008-11) and is 13 assists from passing Kelly Amonte (1993-96) and Alex Aust (2010-13) who're tied for second with 132 career assists.
  • Hannah Leubecker is ninth on the career goals list with 196 in her career. She' just two goals from passing Brooke Griffin (2011-15) and claiming the eighth spot.  
Conference Domination
  • In nine seasons in the Big Ten (no 2020 due to COVID-19), Maryland is 48-7 in Big Ten regular season play and 60-10 overall including the Big Ten Tournament. 
  • Maryland has gone undefeated in regular season Big Ten play in every season but 2021 and 2023. 
Dominating The Series
  • Maryland has never lost to Michigan, winning all 11 meetings in program history. That includes four wins at Michigan. 
  • Last season the then No. 10 Terps defeated then No. 15 Michigan 13-7 behind five goals from Libby May. Emily Sterling was spectacular in the cage, recording 12 saves to only seven goals allowed.
