STATE COLLEGE, PA – No. 12 Maryland men's lacrosse entered the final frame facing a three-goal deficit. It netted six unanswered goals and enjoyed a 13-11 win over No. 4 Penn State at Panzer Stadium on Easter Sunday. The win was the Terps' fifth ranked win of the season.

Maryland (6-3, 1-1 B1G) trailed by as many as five goals in the second quarter. The game took a turn in the second half as Luke Wierman won 11-of-13 face-offs coming out of the locker room. The Terps took their first lead of the game on a goal by Daniel Maltz with 11:24 remaining in the game. Maryland outscored Penn State (7-2, 1-1 B1G) 9-3 in the second half.

Jack Koras led the Terps' offense with four goals and he notched his second hat trick of the season. Maltz netted two goals, both of which occurred in the fourth quarter within eight seconds of each other.

Braden Erksa provided two goals and an assist. Ryan Siracusa, Eric Malever and Eric Spanos all recorded one goal and an assist.

Goalie Logan McNaney became one of just four Terps to reach 500 saves in a Maryland career. He turned away nine shots in the game and allowed the Terps to stay in the game. Ajax Zappitello forced two turnovers and picked up six groundballs for the Maryland defense.

Wierman won 16 face-offs overall, picked up six groundballs and even added two assists for just the second time in his career.

TJ Malone led Penn State with three goals. Goalie Jack Fracyon made 16 saves between the pipes.

Maryland improved to 41-1 all-time against the Nittany Lions, including a perfect 12-0 mark in University Park.

Breaking Down The Action

Penn State scored 40 seconds into the game, but Eric Malever responded for the Terps with an impressive goal in traffic. The Nittany Lions netted five more goals in the quarter to lead 6-2. Eric Spanos netted the other goal for the Terps.
Maryland trailed 8-4 at halftime. Braden Erksa and Jack Koras scored in the second period, but Penn State matched its goal output. TJ Malone's third goal at 14:07 and Luke Walstrum's first at 13:04 gave the Nittany Lions brief five-goal advantages.
Luke Wierman won three straight face-offs to begin the second half and Maryland scored on two of the possessions. It outscored Penn State 3-2 in the quarter with goals by Koras, Ryan Siracusa and Nick Redd. The Terps still trailed 10-7 entering the final frame.
The Terps netted six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to take a 13-10 lead. Daniel Maltz connected on back-to-back goals within eight seconds of one another to give Maryland its first lead of the game. Koras scored twice and Erksa and Daniel Kelly added one goal. Penn State scored one final goal.

Jack Koras posted a hat trick with four goals on Sunday. It was the seventh hat trick of his career and the second of the season.
Maryland has recorded a hat trick in 79 of its last 82 games dating to Feb. 2, 2019. This includes a remarkable streak of 67 straight games with a hat trick through the late 2023 season.
The other hat tricks this season have come from Braden Erksa (three), Daniel Maltz (three), Eric Spanos and Eric Malever.

Jack Koras (four goals) recorded his 19th multi-point game of his career. It was also his 13th game scoring multiple goals.
Braden Erksa (two goals and one assist) had his 20th multi-point game in his two years as a Terp. It was his 14th career game with multiple goals.
Daniel Maltz (two goals) had the 41st multi-point game of his career and the 29th multi-goal game of his career.
Eric Spanos (one goal and one assist) had his 11th multi-point game of his career.
Eric Malever (one goal and one assist) had the 24th multi-point game.
Ryan Siracusa (one goal and one assists) recorded the seventh multi-point game of his career.
Luke Wierman (two assists) scored his seventh career multi-point game. It was his second with multiple assists.

Terps In The Record Books

Luke Wierman became the program's all-time face-off winner in the Terps' season opener. With 16 wins today, he added to his total of 757 for his career.
Wierman is second in Terps' history with 408 groundballs in his career. He added six today and is chasing Andy Claxton (1989-92) who stands alone with 451 career groundballs.
Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With nine in the game, he now has 502 for his career. He became just the fourth Terp ever to reach 500 career saves. Niko Amato (2011-14) is third on the list with 625 saves in his career.
Daniel Maltz scored two goals to increase his career total to 110. He sits at No. 13 on the all-time list. He passed Mark Douglas (1988-91) who had 109 goals in his career and is closing in on Jim Wilkerson (1980-83) with 117 goals.
Maltz is No. 29 in career points with 145. Next up at No. 28 is Kyle Long, who had 149 points from 2019-23.
Ajax Zappitello is 12th on the all-time caused turnovers list with two on Sunday, giving him 64 in his career. He broke a tie with Bryn Holmes (2007-10) and is nearing Ray Megill (2004-07) with 65 caused turnovers in his career.

Get To 10 And Win

Since John Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland has won 157 of the 179 games in which it has scored 10 or more goals. The Terps have scored 10 or more goals in eight of nine games this season.
Maryland is also 118-19 since 2015 when scoring at least 10 goals.

Conference Domination

Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, Maryland is 39-8 in conference play.
Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps have won at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title six out of a possible eight times (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022). Penn State and Johns Hopkins are the only other Big Ten schools to claim a share of the title, each doing so just once.

Dominating The Series

The Terps are a remarkable 41-1 all-time against the Nittany Lions, including a perfect 12-0 mark in University Park.
Last season, the No. 2 Terps came out on top 13-10 in College Park as eight different Terps scored. Eric Kolar and Dante Trader Jr. each scored twice in the win over the No. 9 Nittany Lions.
In 2022 in University Park, the No. 1 Terps scored 13 unanswered goals en route to an 18-7 win.
