Keister Walks It Off In Series Finale Against Hoosiers, 6-5

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball avoided a series sweep against Indiana by rallying for a 6-5 walk-off win in the ninth inning at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Sunday. Captain Kevin Keister was the hero as he drove home Brayden Martin for the game-winning run with an RBI single.
It was Maryland's (22-10, 4-5 B1G) fourth walk-off win, the 13th comeback win and the 10th win in a last at-bat on the season. The Terrapins improved to 9-1 in one-run games.

The Cardiac Terps trailed 5-2 after Indiana (18-15, 3-3 B1G) sparked a four-run top of the sixth inning. They promptly tied the game in the bottom of the inning but entered the final frame at a stalemate. Chris Hacopian set the stage for Keister with a double to put him and Martin in scoring position. Hacopian finished 4-for-4 and drew an RBI hit-by-pitch that earlier tied the game. It was Hacopian's second four-hit game of his freshman season.

Logan Berrier came out of the bullpen and supplied 3.1 hitless and scoreless innings. He also struck out one batter. Berrier improved to 7-0 on the season and ranks second in the NCAA in wins behind Matthew Matthijs (11-1) of North Carolina. The last Terp to start 7-0 or better was current Royals prospect Ryan Ramsey in 2022. He started the season 10-0.
Seven Terps recorded at least one hit. Martin and Jacob Orr drove in the other runs in the contest.
Joey McMannis provided a strong outing as the starter on the mound. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up just one earned run on three hits.

Swope's Take
"The guys found a way and I talked about sweeps and not getting swept is about team character," head coach Matt Swope said. "It's about the camaraderie and I feel like the guys saw it whether we were up or down that we have to battle back and got a win."

Keister On His Walk-Off Hit

"I was expecting an off speed pitch. Got a slider and hit it decently hard but when I first hit it I was like, oh no, I hit on the ground at five infielders, but it snuck through so happy it snuck through. ...We definitely needed that win there after the last two days."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland started the game with three consecutive singles and four batters reaching base in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Terps couldn't capitalize.
  • The Terps took a 2-0 lead in the third. Kevin Keister reached on a fielding error and Chris Hacopian and Sam Hojnar came around to score.
  • Indiana got on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run by Devin Taylor.
  • The Hoosiers scored four runs in the sixth inning, two of which were unearned, on a throwing error. They added two more runs on a two-RBI single to lead 5-2.
  • The Terps tied the game in the sixth at 5-5. Jacob Orr hit an RBI infield single and the Terps drew a walk and a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded.
  • Brayden Martin made a sliding grab in the ninth inning to end the inning and keep the game knotted at 5-5. The Terps went into the bottom of the inning with a chance to earn a walk-off win.
  • Martin walked and Hacopian doubled to put runners on second and third base. Keister then swung at the first pitch he saw and drove home the game-winning run.
