Penn State Tops Maryland In Big Ten Semifinals

COLUMBUS, OH – No. 2 seed Maryland men's lacrosse was defeated by No. 3 seed Penn State, 19-9, in the Big Ten Conference Tournament Semifinals on Thursday at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. 

No. 8 ranked Maryland (8-5) was led by Daniel Maltz and Eric Spanos, who each netted two goals. Luke Wierman (one goal and one assist) and Owen Murphy (one goal and one assist) were the others to record multiple points. Eric Spanos, Daniel Kelly, Ajax Zappitello and Jack Brennan also notched goals. Griffin King scored his first point as a Terp with an assist in the third quarter.  Wierman won 19 faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs. 

No. 9 ranked Penn State (11-3) advanced to the conference final on Saturday. 

Maryland will find out its seeding in the NCAA Tournament on May 5. The selection show will air that Sunday at 9:30 pm on ESPNU.  

Pole Goal!
  • Ajax Zappitello continued the tradition of long pole goals and tallied the sixth long pole goal of the season for Maryland in the third quarter. It was the fifth goal of his career and second of the season. 
  • The other pole goals have come from Jack McDonald, Nick Alviti, Colin Burlace and AJ Larkin
  • In 2023, the Terps had seven pole goals. In 2022, the team had 10. 
Multi Terps Update
  • Daniel Maltz (two goals) had his 43rd multi-point and 31st multi-goal game of his career. 
  • Eric Spanos (two goals) had his 13th multi-point game of his career. It was his 10th multi-goal game of his career. 
  • Luke Wierman (one goal and one assist) scored his eighth career multi-point game of his career. 
  • Owen Murphy (one goal and one assist) had his 26th multi-point game of his career.
Terps In The Record Books
  • Luke Wierman became the program's all-time faceoff winner in the Terps' season opener. With 19 wins today, he added to his career total of 809. 
  • After adding seven today, Wierman is second in Terps history with 433 career groundballs. He is chasing Andy Claxton (1989-92), who stands alone with 451 career groundballs.
  • Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With eight in the game, he now has 545 for his career. Niko Amato (2011-14) is third on the list with 625 saves in his career. 
  • Daniel Maltz scored two goals to increase his career total to 112. He sits at No. 13 on the all-time list and is closing in on Jim Wilkerson (1980-83) with 117 goals.
  • Ajax Zappitello is tied for 10th on the all-time caused turnovers list with Michael Ehrhardt (2011-14). Zappitello added two on Thursday, giving him 68 in his career.
