Terps Post 2-2 Draw Against Stony Brook In 2024 Home Season Opener

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women's soccer (1-0-1) posted a 2-2 draw against Stony Brook (1-0-1) in a back-and-forth match in its 2024 season home opener at Ludwig Field on Aug. 18. 

Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Smith scored her first career goal and the first of the game in just the second minute of action. Junior Ava Morales set up the score with a perfectly placed weighted ball. She now has an assist in each of Maryland's first two games. 
  Sophomore Lisa McIntyre netted Maryland's second goal with a low-right shot to the back of the net in the 40th minute. 
  Senior Liz Beardsley made five saves at goalie. Through two games this season, she has collected 12 saves.  

Gabrielle Cote and Leah Rifas scored each of Stony Brook's goals. Both scores occurred minutes in response to each of Maryland's goals. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Kelsey Smith scored her first career goal off a beautifully weighted ball by Ava Morales in the second minute.
  • Stony Brook promptly responded with their own goal from Gabrielle Cote in the ninth minute to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Maryland had back-to-back opportunities on corner kicks in the 23rd minute but could not capitalize as one of its shots was blocked. 
  • Lisa McIntyre put the Terps back ahead, scoring off a loose possession in the 40th minute.
  • Three minutes after the Terps' goal, Stony Brook's Leah Rifas tied the game up at 2-2.
  • In the 53rd minute, Morales lined up a shot at the center of the goal that was saved. On the other, Liz Beardsley made an athletic diving stop on a shot to the bottom left corner.
  • Beardsley followed up her previous save with a leaping stop on a free kick in the 59th minute. 
  • Maryland had one last chance to take the lead but two consecutive shots were blocked in the 89th minute.
Season Home Opener Success 
  • The Terps are unbeaten in their last eight home-opening games with a record of 4-0-4.
  • Maryland's streak dates back to Aug. 18, 2017, with a 2-1 win over Drexel. 
Honoring Past Terps 
  • Shannon Higgins Cirovski was an honorary captain of the game. 
  • Cirovski coached Maryland women's soccer from 1999-2004, guiding the Terps to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2004. 
  • She was also named ACC Coach of the Year twice, in 1999 and 2002. 
  • Maryland also honored more than 30 women's soccer alumnae at halftime.
