Terps Fall To Hawkeyes In Hard-Fought Match, 3-2

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland volleyball was defeated by Iowa, 3-2, (25-27, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 13-15) on Sep. 28 at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. 

Maryland's (9-4, 0-2 Big Ten) first set featured 14 instances where the game was tied, and neither team led by more than three. This set the tone for the rest of the match, as both teams went down to the wire in each set, trading wins. However, the Hawkeyes outlasted the Terps. 

Samantha Schnitta pitched in another all-around great performance. She tallied 14 kills, seven digs, seven aces, two assists and three blocks. Her seven aces set a new career-high after previously setting it in the Terps' last match against Northwestern. Schnitta now has 44 service aces on the season, ranking first in the nation.

Sydney Bryant led the Terps with a career-high 24 kills. She was the second Terp with 20 or more kills this season after Schnitta had 21 kills against American on Sept. 7. The sophomore now has six matches in her career with double-digit kills, five of which occurred this season. She added seven digs and three blocks. 
  Eva Rohrbach added 10 kills, four digs and six blocks. Lilly Gunted led the Terps with 19 digs. Sydney Dowler (31) and Zoe Huang (15) combined as other standout performers for 46 assists. Dowler added 11 digs for her 36th career double-double and first of the season. She now also ranks fourth all-time in program history in career assists. 
  The match was Maryland's third consecutive five-set match. The Hawkeyes improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play. 


Breaking Down The Action

Set 1: - Iowa 27 - Maryland 25 
  • Maryland opened the set 3-2 with a kill down the line by Sydney Bryant, followed up by Samantha Schnitta's first ace of the game.
  • Bryant recorded a massive cross-court kill, tied the score at 11-11.
  • Sydney Dowler logged her third assist after a back row attack by Schnitta at 14-14.
  • Dowler made a solo block at 16-18, quickly followed by Schnitta's solo block, which tied the score at 18-18.
  • Iowa called their first timeout after Schnitta aced the Hawkeyes 22-22.
  • After a close first set, Maryland lost set one 27-25 after a serve-receive error. The set featured 14 instances where it was tied, and neither team pulled away by more than three.
Set 2: Maryland 25 - Iowa 21
  • After another assist from Dowler to Bryant, Maryland started set two 3-2.
  • Eva Rohrbach blocked the Hawkeyes, and Maryland led 7-2.
  • Rohrback recorded another block at 14-12.
  • Another ace by Schnitta put the Terps up 19-13, marking her 40th ace of the season.
  • Maryland won the second set 25-21 after an ace by Jonna Spohn. Iowa cut the deficit with a 4-0 run, but the Terps closed the set to tie at 1-1. 
Set 3: Iowa 25 - Maryland 23
  • Bryant was hitting .500 and scored her 11th kill of the game to open set three 2-2.
  • At 11-13, Bryant recorded another kill.
  • Schnitta tied the score 18-18 after tallying her sixth kill against the Hawkeyes.
  • Rohrbach powered through Iowa's block at 22-22.
  • The Terps fell short in set three, losing 23-25.
Set 4: Maryland 25 - Iowa 23
  • After a slow start for Maryland in set four, the Terps trailed 2-5 after a block by Bryant.
  • Bryant with her 19th kill followed by two blocks, tied the score 11-11.
  • Sam Csire put the Terps within one at 16-17 after a kill on the outside.
  • Rohrbach recorded her eighth kill of the game and tied the score 20-20.
  • Maryland won 25-23 with a slide attack from Rohrbach.
Set 5: Maryland 13 - Iowa 15
  • Maryland started set 5 leading 4-2, after Schnitta aced the Hawkeyes.
  • Schnitta recorded her 13th kill, and the Hawkeyes trail 8-7.
  • Bryant recorded her 24th kill, hitting .340 at 11-10.
  • After a close battle, Maryland lost the set 13-15.
