NEW YORK, NY – Maryland's
Rose Coats set a new school record in the 5,000 meters to highlight day two of the Dr. Sander Scorcher at The Armory. Overall, the Terps closed out the two-day meet with a pair of event wins and a pair of runner-up finishes on Saturday.
In the final event of the day, Coats crushed the previous school record in the 5,000 meters by over 38 seconds. She took first place in 15 minutes, 54.62 seconds which also stands as a new Dr. Sander Scorcher meet record. That time also stands as the 29
th fastest mark nationally.
In the Open Mile,
Lucy Scothern picked up Maryland's other first place finish clocking a time of 4-minutes, 58.42 seconds.
Tolu Akinduro took second in the Invitational Long Jump at 19-feet, 2.50 inches, while Ka'nai Bey won her heat and took second overall in the Seeded 200 meters (24.61 seconds).
Other top performances on the final day included
Nyla Cherry posting a personal-best in the Invitational Long Jump with a mark of 18-feet, 10.50 inches to place sixth.
Isabella Castillo also placed ninth in the event at 17-feet, 11.50 inches.
The Terps also saw two strong relay efforts in the 4x400 relay. The Invitational squad of Samantha Payne,
Lydia Robling,
Kami Joi Hickson, and
Emma Pegg placed fifth (3:43.94), while the Open relay team of
Maya Mosley,
Madison Depry,
Simi Balogun, and
Jewel Ofotan placed fourth (3:56.77).
The Terps will return to action next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at the Penn State National Open in University Park at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. The meet will be streamed live on both days through B1G+.
