Maryland Tests No. 2 Michigan In 101-83 Loss

Diggy Coit had 31 points in Saturday’s back-and-forth Big Ten battle

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Terps went toe-to-toe with No. 2 Michigan on Saturday night at the XFINITY Center, but the unbeaten Wolverines escaped with a 101-83 win.

Maryland's offense had one of its best nights of the season, and the Terps (6-5, 0-2 Big Ten) became the first team this season to lead Michigan at the half, but a strong resurgence from the Wolverines (10-0, 2-0 Big Ten) in the second helped them rally to defeat Maryland in a Big Ten classic.

David Coit had a huge night for the Terps, scoring 31 points and shooting 8-of-12 from three-point range. He hit a trio of buckets from deep in the game's first four minutes as Maryland built an early lead. Coit posted Maryland's third 30+ point performance of the season. Coit had 22 points (6-of-9 from three-point range) in the first half to mark the most by a Terp in the first half of a contest since Rodney Rice had 26 against Mount St. Mary's in 2023. He finished just one three-pointer shy of Maryland's all-time record for a single game, set by Mike Jones in 2006. Myles Rice came alive late in the first half, scoring 10-straight points as Maryland regained a lead. Rice scored 12 first-half points (and finished with 15) as Maryland totaled 50 points in the opening frame, the team's highest mark this season. Michigan rallied in the second half on a night where the Wolverines shot 12-of-19 (63%) from three-point range. Maryland outrebounded the Wolverines 29-26, but Michigan dealt the final blow in the Big Ten bout. Maryland pushed the highly-ranked Wolverines (No. 1 in the NET and coaches' poll) to the brink, scoring 83 against a team that entered Saturday allowing just 66 per game.

The XFINITY Center hosted Maryland stars of past, present, and future. Former championship coach Gary Williams and NBA great Buck Williams were in attendance while current quarterback Malik Washington, basketball's incoming Baba Oladotun, future pass-rusher Zion Elee, and incoming track star and U.S. Olympian Quincy Williams fired up the Red-Out crowd.
