- The Maryland Indoor track and field team will split up this weekend as some athletes will travel to the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational and others will compete at the BU Valentine Invitational. The action will begin on Friday, Feb. 14 at Clemson starting at 11 AM. On Saturday, Feb. 15, both events will be in action starting at 9 AM.

 
A peek at the scheduLe
  • These will be the sixth meets of a three-month Indoor season leading up to Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis, IN on February 28 and the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, VA on March 14-15.
  • The Terps will compete in some of the toughest meets on the collegiate indoor track and field schedule, including the Penn State National Open, the Clemson Tiger Paw Invite, and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, MA.

The Terps are set to compete in eight meets this year to prep for the Big Ten and NCAA Championships.

  • In the weight throw, Chioma Njoku won with marks of 20.40m and Morgan Graham took fourth with a new PR of 17.45m.
  • Nyla Cherry placed sixth in the long jump at 5.42m.
  • Ashley Thomas set a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles prelims at 8.97 seconds.
  • In the 60 meters, Armanie Coleman placed second, tying the school record and her PR of 7.43 seconds, followed by Victoria Teasley in eighth place at 7.79
  • Katie Turk won the mile run with a time of 4:49.33, a new PR, and the eighth-best time in program history. Lucy Scothern followed in third (4:59.85) and Cayden Justice in eleventh (5:11.99).
  • Terps took 1-2-3 in the 600 meters with Kami Joi Hickson finishing first (1:32.17), Sam Payne in second (1:33.15 -- fifth-best in program history), and Emma Pegg in third (1:33.48). Lydia Robling placed fifth in the event (1:34.28) and Ariana Wright took tenth (1:37.81).
  • Tolu Akinduro won the triple jump with marks of 12.06m.
  • In the high jump, Jennessa Wolfe placed fifth at 1.66m
  • Maya Mosley took seventh in the 400 meters at 57.54
  • Armaine Coleman (24.61) and Maya Valmon (24.83) took third and fifth respectively in the 200 meters.
  • Hannah Mack placed fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:07.61

  • This marks the second straight year Maryland has competed at the Valentine Invitational.
  • Anna Coffin highlighted the Terps' performances there as she posted the third fastest mile time in program history (4:45.33).
  • With the split weekend, it was primarily a distance focused group in Boston: Coffin, Katie Altieri (5,000m), Kami Joi Hickson (800m), Emma Pegg (800m), Emmi Simon (mile), and Katie Turk (3,000m).

  • Tolu Akinduro took eighth in the triple jump with marks of 12.49m (40-11.75), the fourth-best in school history, and her indoor PR.
  • Chioma Njoku placed second in the weight throw with marks of 21.26m (69-09.00), the second-best in program history, and her PR.

  • Armani Coleman holds the program record for the 60-meter dash (7.43 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (23.69).

  • Isabella Castillo ranks ninth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.56 seconds).
  • Maya Valmon ranks fifth in the 300 meters (38.86) and eighth in the 400 meters (55.13).
  • Sam Payne ranks sixth in the 300 meters (39.09), 10th in the 400 meters (55.22), and fourth in the 500 meters (1:13.57).

  • Rose Coats holds the program record for the 5,000 meters (15:54.62).
  • The quartet of Turk, Maya Mosley, Emma Pegg, and Emmi Simon are tied for 10th all-time in the distance medley relay (11:45.76).
  • The foursome of Ka'nai Bey, Valmon, Hickson, and Payne hold the seventh fastest time in the 4x400 relay (3:40.05).
  • Jennessa Wolfe ranks 10th in the high jump (5' 8.75").
  • Tolu Akinduro ranks fourth in the triple jump (41' 11.75").
  • Chioma Njoku ranks second in the weight throw (69' 9.00").

Olympians In Paris
  • A trio of Terps competed this past summer in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Maryland celebrated as Thea LaFond won Gold in the triple jump becoming the first Track Terp to medal in the Olympic games. LaFond posted a mark of 15.02 meters (49-feet, 3.5 inches) - a new Dominica national record in the event. She was the 10th Gold medalist in Maryland history and the first Terp student-athlete to win Gold since Vicky Bullett in 1988.
  • With a throw of 77.92 meters, Maryland track and field assistant throws coach Rudy Winkler placed sixth in the hammer throw finals. The mark was his best effort at the Olympic games after he posted marks of 71.89 meters in 2016 (Rio) and 77.08 meters in 2021 (Tokyo). The sixth-place finish was also his best showing at the Olympics improving upon his previous high of seventh in Tokyo.
  • Chioma Onyekwere represented Nigeria in the discus after making her second Olympic games.
  • Additionally, assistant coach Danielle Siebert served as Women's Head Manager for Team USA – her second straight Olympic Games on the staff.
