Box Score SEATTLE – Maryland baseball was defeated by Washington, 12-4, in game one at Husky Ballpark on Friday. Maryland is now 11-11 and 1-3 in Big Ten, heading into game two tomorrow.
The Terps scored two runs in the top of the first inning but were outscored 12-2 for the remainder of the game. An RBI double by Orr in the sixth made it a three-score game at 6-3, but Washington (10-13, 3-1 Big Ten) plated five runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead and hold on for the remainder of the game.
Orr's RBI in the sixth was one of his two in the game. The other was recorded on a groundout in the first. Alex Calarco had the other two RBIs in the contest. He drew a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded in the first and hit a solo home run in the eighth. Calarco leads the Terps with 39 RBIs through 22 games.
The home run was Calarco's 11th of the season. Calarco now has 23 home runs in his career, including 15 as a Terp. The senior hit eight with Northwestern from 2022-23. As a team, the Terps have launched 34 home runs over 22 games this season.
Kyle McCoy pitched 4.2 innings as Maryland's starter. He gave up five earned runs and struck out six batters. Cristofer Cespedes, Logan Koester and Ryan Van Buren all made bullpen appearances.
Van Buren pitched 2.2 innings in relief and struck out a season-high five batters.
