PHILADELPHIA – No. 6 Maryland women's lacrosse was narrowly defeated by No. 15 UPenn, 13-12, at Franklin Field on Monday. The Terps are now 7-3 overall heading into their matchup with Arizona State on April 3.
After Penn (6-3) scored the game's first two goals, the Terps scored four of the game's next five goals to lead 4-3 entering the second frame. However, the Quakers rattled off three straight scores and outscored the Terps 5-1 in the second to lead 8-5 at halftime. They later led by as many as four goals before the Terps rallied to tie the game at 11 apiece at the 8:22 mark and 12 apiece at the 4:51 mark in the fourth quarter. But Penn's Keeley Block scored the go-ahead and the eventual game-winner with 24.8 seconds to play.
Kori Edmondson (four goals) and Jordyn Lipkin (three goals) led the Terps offensively, each posting a hat trick. It was Edmondson's 24th hat tick of her career and her seventh of the season. Lipkin earned the sixth hat trick of her career and third of the season. Edmondson also won five draw controls, picked up four groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Maisy Clevenger (two goals & three assists) and Kate Sites (two goals) were the other Terps to record multiple goals.
Devin Livingston also entered the scoring column.
Goalie JJ Suriano made five saves between the pipes before being replaced by
Julia Ward. Ward allowed just two goals and made three saves, all occurring in the fourth quarter. She was pivotal in allowing the Terps to tie the game in the fourth.
Annabella Schafer also helped anchor Maryland's defense with two caused turnovers.
Maryland won 16-of-29 draw controls.
Kayla Gilmore recorded four wins and
Shelby Sullivan added two wins.
Breaking Down The Action
- Penn opened the game with two quick goals, but the Terps scored four of the next five to lead 4-3 entering the second frame. Kate Sites, Jordyn Lipkin, Maisy Clevenger and Kori Edmondson all entered the scoring column. Clevenger and Edmondson's goals occurred 16 seconds after one another as the quarter closed.
- Penn had an 8-5 lead at the half. Penn scored five goals in the second quarter. Maryland's lone score came from Edmondson at the 4:31 mark.
- Penn still held a three-goal lead over the Terps heading into the final quarter of the game. The game was still tightly contested, with both teams each scoring twice in the third. Sites and Devin Livingston both tallied Maryland's scores.
- The Terps rallied to tie the game up 12-12 with a little under five minutes remaining in the contest. However, Penn scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left.
