COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 9 Maryland women's lacrosse defeated Ohio State, 8-5, on Senior Day at Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Sunday. The Terps improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play while holding the Buckeyes to a season-low scoring output.

Maryland's defense was anchored by JJ Suriano, who made three saves, and Caroline Smith, who added three saves in the contest. The Terps limited the Buckeyes (8-6, 1-6 Big Ten) to just 11 shots on goal. Maryland outshot Ohio State 29-16 overall in the contest. Maddy Sterling (two), Sophie Halus, Kennedy Major and Fallon George all recorded caused turnovers.

The Terps allowed one goal in each quarter, including two scores in the second. Maryland's defense stepped up late in the fourth, as its offense went scoreless in the final frame.

Kayla Gilmore, Kori Edmondson and Kate Sites led the Terps offensively, each scoring two goals. Shelby Sullivan and Chrissy Thomas also added scores. Thomas also recorded three assists.

Gilmore and Sullivan combined for 10 wins in the draws circle, each recording five wins. As a team, the Terps won 12-of-16 draw controls.

Breaking Down The Action

Maryland led 2-1 entering the second frame. The Terps began the game with two straight scores by freshmen Kayla Gilmore and Shelby Sullivan. The Terps' defense limited the Buckeyes to just one shot during the period.
The Terps led 5-3 at the break. Gilmore scored a second, and Kori Edmondson and Kate Sites scored their firsts of the game. The Buckeyes tied the game up at the 4:51 mark, but goals at the 1:26 and 25-second marks gave the Terps their lead back.
Maryland led 8-4 entering the final frame. Edmondson and Sites scored their second goal of the game, and Chrissy Thomas added a score. Its defense was playing lights out.
The Terps closed out the game by allowing just one goal in the final frame.

Kayla Gilmore (two goals) recorded her sixth career multi-point game. This was her fourth multi-assist game. It was her fourth with multiple goals.
Chrissy Thomas (one goal & three assists) had the 34th multi-point game of her career. It was her 24th game with multiple assists.

Home Cooking

Maryland is 178-12 at home under head coach Cathy Reese. It has eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013-19 and 2021).
