No. 7 Terps Rally Past Rutgers, 8-7

PISCATAWAY, NJ – No. 7 Maryland women's lacrosse rallied past Rutgers, overcoming an early three-goal deficit in its 8-7 win at SHI Stadium on Wednesday. The Terps improved to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten play, winning four of their last five games.

Rutgers (8-8, 2-5 Big Ten) led 4-1 at the 9:53 mark in the second quarter and later trailed 4-2 entering the break after a goal by Jordyn Lipkin. However, Maryland limited Rutgers to just three goals in the second half to mount its comeback. Lipkin netted her third goal of the game at 14:10 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 5-5 and Kori Edmondson scored less than a minute later to give Maryland the lead.

The Scarlet Knights had a potential go-ahead goal overturned under six minutes with the game tied at 7-7. Edmondson then responded with a second go-ahead goal, this one being the eventual gam winner.

Lipkin (three goals) posted the eighth hat trick of her career, including her fourth of the season. Edmondson (three goals) also finished with a hat trick, scoring all of her goals in the final frame. It was her ninth of the season and 26th of her career. Kate Sites (1 goal & 1 assist) and Kayla Gilmore were the other goal scorers for the Terps.

Edmondson eclipsed her goal total from a season ago. She's also two goals away from setting a new single-season career-high mark, as she scored 41 during her freshman season. She leads the Terps with 40 goals through 15 games.

Chrisssy Thomas dished out two assists. This was her fifth straight game with multiple dimes. She now leads the team with 31, setting a new single-season career-high mark. The fifth-year attacker is also 11th all-time on Maryland's assists list.

Goalie JJ Suriano had one of the best performances of her young career. The sophomore made 11 stops between the pipes, matching her career-high in Big Ten play. It was the fourth time this season she recorded 10 or more stops.

Suriano was helped by a defense that caused six turnovers. Sophie Halus, Annabella Schafer, Edmondson (three) and Lipkin all caused turnovers. The Terps' defense made several crucial stops. The biggest was one at the buzzer that prevented the Scarlet Knights from getting a shot off that could've potentially tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Hailey Russo, Shelby Sullivan and Gilmore combined for seven wins in the draw circle, each recording five wins. As a team, the Terps won 10-of-19 draw controls.
