Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 3 Terps Advance To B1G Championship, Defeating No. 7 Penn State, 10-8

ANN ARBOR, MI – No. 2-seeded and No. 3-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse advanced to the Big Ten Tournament title game for the seventh time in program history after defeating No. 3-seeded and No. 7-ranked Penn State, 10-8, in the semifinals at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Thursday. Maryland improved to 11-2 overall, picking up its eighth win over a ranked team.

Maryland will play No. 1-seeded and No. 5-ranked Ohio State in the championship game at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on May 3. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Terps are chasing their fifth Big Ten Tournament championship and ninth conference tournament title overall. The last time the Terps matched up with the Buckeyes in the tournament championship was in 2017, where they also matched up in the NCAA championship. The Terps won both of those matchups.

Braden Erksa scored the opening goal just 32 seconds into the game. Maryland never surrendered the lead from that point on, led by a first-half hat trick by Daniel Kelly and a standout performance between the pipes by First Team All-Big Ten goalie Logan McNaney. Penn State (10-4) rallied to tie the game twice, 6-6, at the 1:32 mark of the third and, 7-7, at the 7:55 mark of the fourth. However, Kelly's fourth goal of the game with 7:13 on the clock was the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. The Terps added two more tallies for good measure.

Kelly led the Terps with a career-high five goals, including his three in the first half. He earned his 11th career hat trick, including four this season. Matthew Keegan (3 goals & 1 assist) also posted a hat trick. He has fourth this season and 19 in his career. Maryland has recorded 15 hat tricks as a team this season.

McNaney finished the game with 10 saves between the pipes. It was his 11th time this season making double-digit saves. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Will Schaller, AJ Larkin, Zack Goorno and George Stamos bolstered Maryland's defense as each caused a turnover.

Together, they matched the Nittany Lions' season-low goal scoring output. The Terps also held Penn State to eight goals on March 29 in the regular-season. Schaller was the main catalyst in making that happen, limiting Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Traynor to just one goal and an assist. Maryland has now held an opponent to single-digit goals in 11 of 13 games this season.

Erksa (1 goal & 1 assist) and Elijah Stobaugh also scored goals in the contest. Erksa now has goals in all 13 games this season.

Maryland is a conference-best 12-5 in Big Ten Tournament games. It's also 43-2 all-time against Penn State since the two programs first met in 1924.
