FINAL FOUR BOUND! No. 2 Seed Terps Defeat No. 16 Georgetown, 9-6

ANNAPOLIS, MD – No. 2-seeded and No. 4-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four for the 30th time in program history after defeating No. 16-ranked Georgetown, 9-6, in the quarterfinals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium before 17,721 fans on Sunday. The Terps now have the most Final Four appearances of any program, breaking a tie with Johns Hopkins.

Maryland improved to 13-3 overall with nine wins over ranked opponents. It will play No. 6 seed Syracuse in the semifinals on May 24. The game will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. It will air on ESPN2 at 2:30 p.m.

Despite holding Georgetown (12-5) scoreless for 16:48s to begin the game, Maryland led by just one at 6-5 entering the fourth. However, its defense continued to suffocate the Hoyas' offense and surrendered just one goal in the final frame. Two goals by Braden Erksa and one by Daniel Kelly sealed the win.

Maryland's defense limited Georgetown's offense, which averaged 18 goals over its last five games, to six goals. Defensive Player of the Year Will Schaller was a big part of that, as he held Georgetown's leading scorer Aidan Carroll to two tallies. Geordy Holmes, Eric Kolar, Colin Burlace and Jack McDonald were also contributors, each finishing with a caused turnover. This was the 13th time the Terps held an opponent to single-digit goals this season.

Maryland's first six goals were scored by a different player. Erksa led the attack with three goals and an assist. It was the 11th of his career and the fourth of the season. Erksa has a goal in all 16 games this season.

Kelly (2 goals), Bryce Ford (1 goal & 2 assists), Eric Spanos (1 goal & 1 assist) and Zach Whittier also scored goals. Kelly has a goal in nine straight contests. Holmes' goal was the first of his career.

Goalie Logan McNaney finished the game with 12 saves between the pipes. It was his 14th time this season making double-digit saves. Jonah Carrier led the Terps from the faceoff dot with a career-high tying nine wins.

Maryland is 75-42 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Under head coach John Tillman, the Terps have made every tournament since 2011, going 33-11, including an 11-1 mark in quarterfinal games. This is Maryland's 47th tournament appearance and an NCAA-best 22nd straight appearance.

The 17,721 fans in attendance broke the record for the highest attended NCAA Quarterfinal game in tournament history.

  Tillman's Take
  • "Really proud of our guys. Kind of had a feeling it would feel like a Big Ten game, and that's really what it was. Obviously, give credit to Kevin and Georgetown on a great year. They've been playing as hot as anybody, and certainly their future is really bright there. But the crowd was phenomenal. Navy was such a good host for this game."
From The Guys
  • "Proud of it," Kelly said regarding making his fourth Final Four. "But we were here in the same spot last year, and we didn't get the job done. This is a hungry group that's going to Boston for a reason, and that is to bring that [trophy] back home."
Breaking Down The Action
