COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Heading into his 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament leading the Terrapins, Maryland men's lacrosse head coach
John Tillman has signed a contract extension through June 30, 2030, Interim Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics, Colleen Sorem announced.
Now in his 15th season leading the Terps, Tillman has led Maryland to two National Championships, with the Terps winning titles in 2017 and 2022. The 2022 season was a perfect 18-0 campaign, the most wins by any team in a season without a loss in the history of college men's lacrosse.
"Coach Tillman is a championship coach both on and off the field," said Sorem. "John has blended the program's historic 'Be The Best' mantra with his own principles of high character in all aspects of life. We are thrilled he will continue to lead our program at Maryland as we are in the midst of one of the most successful eras in Maryland lacrosse's illustrious history."
In his time at Maryland, Tillman has compiled a 192-55 record for a 77.7 win percentage. Overall, he is 212-74 (74.1 win percentage) in 18 years as a head coach, which is first among all active coaches in Division I in win percentage (with a minimum of 10 Division I seasons). He is second all-time in victories in Maryland men's lacrosse history.
Tillman has coached Maryland to 10 Final Fours (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2024) and eight NCAA Championship game appearances (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2016, 2021, 2022, 2024). He has led the Terps to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, the longest active streak among all head coaches in the nation.
"I have nothing but respect for the Maryland men's lacrosse program, and being able to serve as the head coach of this program is something I take great pride in," said Tillman. "This program is one with tremendous tradition and is one that I look to uphold every day. It's about the players, the coaching staff, the alums, and everyone on staff who contribute to our success. I am proud to be the head coach at Maryland and look forward to continuing to build a culture on and off the field, producing great men. It is an honor to coach this program, representing our school and our state."
