Mckinley Heaven's Late Goal Earns Maryland 2-1 Conference Win Over Indiana

Mckinley Heaven's goal in the 87th minute helped Maryland win its fifth match of the season.

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Mckinley Heaven's first-career goal in the 87th minute capped off a second half comeback as the Terps (5-4, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated the Hoosiers (3-3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) 2-1 at Ludwig Field on Thursday night. Heaven's first-career start paid off immensely as she found the back of the net for the match's decisive goal as the Terps beat Indiana for the first time ever in College Park.

Maryland outshot Indiana 15-9 on a night where the Terps' offense broke through in the second half. Heaven and Kelsey Smith's timely goals erased a Hoosiers lead and earned Maryland its first conference win of the season and fifth overall, the program's most since 2019.

A scoreless first half looked to be the blueprint for an identical second, but Indiana's Grace Hamm snuck a shot past the Maryland defense in the 51st minute to give the Hoosiers a lead that would last all of seven minutes before Smith wove through the Indiana backfield to bury her fourth goal of the season and even the match.  Smith's goal would go on to be the equalizer and Heaven's would be the dagger as the Terps turned the lights out on Indiana on Light Up Ludwig Night in College Park. Faith Luckey faced nine shots and made four saves in the win.  How it Happened:
  • Maryland was awarded the match's first corner kick in the third minute.
  • Lisa McIntyre recorded the Terps' first shot in the fourth minute.
  • Luckey made her first save on IU's first shot in the ninth minute.
  • McIntyre forced Indiana to make a save on UMD's first shot on goal in the 24th minute.
  • Maryland put up a slew of shots on a barrage in the 27th minute, but couldn't break through.
  • Indiana scored in the 51st minute on a shot from Hamm.
  • Smith evened the match in the 59th minute with her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
  • Heaven's first-career goal sealed the Terps' win in the 87th minute.

Marchiano's Message:
  • "I think it means a lot for Heaven. Coming off an injury, she's worked really hard to get back in. For a young player to have that big of an impact is exciting. Now we need to make sure she continues to develop, but I'm really happy for her."
  • "I think more than just Heaven tonight, I think the team performed at a pretty high level and gave ourselves a chance to win."
  • "We were able to capitalize on a couple of our chances in the second half. We talked about consistency, and I think from the first minute to the last minute, our consistency level was pretty good."
  • "Smith's more than just speed. She's got really clever ideas and there's a way that she manipulates the ball."
  • "It was a good night here at Ludwig. It's always nice to play under the lights here."
A Heavenly Debut:
  • "It's an amazing feeling. Very surreal. I'm really glad that I came up for my team when we needed it the most."
  • "I just saw a sliver of space, so I decided to attack it and then slot it home."
  • "We worked on moving the ball and attacking the opportunities when the time was right, not trying to force anything. Then, when our opportunities came, we were able to execute."
Up Next:
  • Maryland stays in College Park to take on Purdue on Sept. 21. The match will start at 12 PM and air on B1G+.
