Rutgers Grinds Out 68-57 Win Over Maryland

Solomon Washington posted his sixth-career double-double on Sunday afternoon.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — The Terps dropped a 68-57 decision to Rutgers in a defensive battle on Sunday afternoon. Both teams struggled to find their offensive grooves and the Scarlet Knights outlasted the Terps, dropping Maryland to 10-15 (3-11 Big Ten) on the season. 

Solomon Washington's sixth-career double-double highlighted Maryland's efforts on Sunday. He scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 14 boards to lead all players as the Terps outgained Rutgers 41-38 on the glass. Darius Adams recorded a 13-point, six-rebound game in his New Jersey homecoming. He logged his 17th-career double-digit scoring performance of his freshman season. David Coit continued his climb up the Maryland all-time ranks with two three-pointers in his 12-point, five-assist game. His 64 three pointers on the season are already tied for the 15th-most by a Terp in a single season. Rutgers (10-15, 3-11 Big Ten) claimed a second-half lead with a 10-0 run early in the frame and held on to capture its third conference win of the season. Tariq Francis led the Scarlet Knights with 21 points. Maryland is back in action with a road game against Northwestern on Feb. 18. 

How it Happened:
1st Half:
  • Collin Metcalf got the Terps' scoring started with a put-back layup.
  • Washington got on the board with a physical jumper. 
  • Elijah Saunders drained an early three to tie the game at 7-7 five minutes in.
  • Adams gave Maryland its first lead of the night with a layup.
  • Coit got on the board as Maryland went up 11-9.
  • Baskets from Coit and Washington cut the Rutgers lead to 18-17 with six minutes in the half. 
  • A Washington dunk put the Terps back ahead, 21-20. 
  • A three from Adams cut the deficit to 27-26 in the closing minutes.
  • The two teams sat tied at 27-27 at the half.
2nd Half:
  • Rutgers recorded the first seven points of the half before Saunders put a layup home. 
  • The Scarlet Knights built to their lead with a 10-0 run.
  • Coit drilled a three with 11:30 to play. 
  • Adams reached double figures with a three with eight minutes to play. 
  • Maryland chipped away at the Rutgers lead with a 6-0 run. 
  • Andre Mills nailed a three to make it a five-point game with 6:30 to play.
  • Rutgers hit a three to go ahead 60-51 with 3:30 remaining.
  • Washington clinched his double-double in the final minutes.
  • The Scarlet Knights closed out the 68-57 win. 
Double-Digit Days:
  • Adams (13 points) scored in double figures for the 17th time in his freshman season.
  • Coit (12 points) tallied his 16th double-digit game of the season and the 72nd of his career.
  • Washington (11 points) scored 10+ points for the 10th time this season and the 27th time in his career.
