Whittier Nets Triple-Overtime Winner as No. 10 Maryland Downs Virginia 13-12

Maryland outlasted the rival Cavaliers to win the 99th game in series history.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Zach Whittier was No. 10 Maryland's overtime hero as he scored 3:35 minutes into triple overtime to lift the Terps past Virginia 13-12 and move Maryland to 3-3 in 2026.  After UVA scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter to take a late lead, Leo Johnson scored his third of the day with 39.5 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. Whittier played hero for Maryland with the overtime goal to seal the rivalry clash. Maryland has now won nine of its last 11 overtime games.  Maryland opened the game with a four-goal first quarter. Chris Lyons opened the Terps' scoring with his 139th career goal, which leads all active players nationwide. Zach Whittier, Aiden Aitken, and Leo all added goals after the Terps killed off a UVA two-man advantage. Brian Ruppel made three key saves in the opening frame. 

Elijah Stobaugh scored back-to-back goals just 65 seconds apart in Maryland's three-goal second quarter that saw the Terps take a 7-5 lead into the break. Maryland added four more in the third quarter as Braden Erksa, Johnson, Spencer Ford, and Thomas Gravino all added goals. Braden Erksa tallied four assists while Henry Dodge went 10-15 on draw controls to lead Maryland's efforts in the X. The Terps open Big Ten play on the road against Penn State on Mar. 21. 

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Virginia scored just over a minute into the game to open the scoring.
  • Lyons got the Terps on the board with his 11th of the season.
  • Ruppel came up with two huge saves during a UVA two-man advantage. 
  • Whittier scored at 4:01 to give Maryland its first lead.
  • Virginia tied the game 10 seconds later. 
  • Aitken built a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the season.
  • Johnson's 15th of the season gave Maryland a 4-2 lead to take into the second. 
2nd Quarter:
  • Virginia scored in the first minute. 
  • Matt Higgins got on the board with 13:13 to play.
  • UVA cut the lead to 5-4 at 7:09
  • The Cavaliers tied the game with 5:54 to play.
  • Stobaugh's 10th goal of the season put the Terps back ahead. 
  • Stobaugh's second goal in 65 seconds gave UMD a 7-5 lead. 
3rd Quarter:
  • Virginia scored an early goal.
  • Ford netted his fourth of the season to get Maryland's second-half scoring started. 
  • Gravino went coast to coast for his first-career goal as the Terps took a 9-6 lead. 
  • UVA crept closer with a goal with 7:03 to play. 
  • Erksa scored to get the Terps to double figures.
  • Johnson's second of the day gave Maryland an 11-8 lead to take into the fourth. 
4th Quarter:
  • Back-to-back UVA goals made it a one-goal game with 11:19 to play.
  • Virginia tied the game at 11-11 with 4:45 to play. 
  • UVA claimed a lead with its fourth straight goal. 
  • Johnson's third of the day tied the game at 12-12.
  • Maryland went to overtime for the first time this season. 
First Overtime:
  • Neither team scored in the tense period.
Second Overtime:
  • Both defenses stayed strong in the second OT frame.
Third Overtime:
  • Ruppel made a key save midway through the frame.
  • Ruppel came up big again with his 13th save with two minutes to play.
  • Whittier ended the game with his second goal of the day with 1:25 left in OT.
Multi-Terp Points:
  • Johnson (three goals, one assist) scored multiple goals for the 34th time in his career and logged his 47th-career multi-point game.
  • Whittier (two goals, one assist) logged his ninth-career multi-point game. 
  • Erksa (one goal, four assists) played in his 45th-career game with multiple assists.
  • Stobaugh (two goals) tallied his seventh-career multi-goal game.
  • Higgins (one goal, two assists) collected multiple assists for the third time in his career. 
Victories Over Virginia:
  • Saturday marked the 99th all-time meeting between Maryland and Virginia, with the Terps winning 52 of the previous games.
  • Maryland has now won three straight games in the series history.
  • The Terps improved to 9-6 against Virginia under Tillman and 24-19 in College Park.
Overtime is Terp Time:
  • The Terps are 18-9 under Tillman in overtime games and have won nine of their past 11 dating back to 2020.
  • Maryland is 40-30-4 all-time in overtime games dating back to the second season in 1925. 
Home Cooking:
