Men's Tennis Sets Its Sights On First ACC Win Against NC State Sunday

April 5, 2002

* The Maryland men's tennis team continues play in the ACC at home this weekend when they face NC State Sunday at 11 a.m. on the outdoor courts of the Tennis Center At College Park.

* The Terps enter this weekend 6-7 overall and are looking for their first conference victory of the season against the Wolfpack. In their most recent match, Maryland lost to No. 22 Wake Forest, 7-0, on March 24.

* Sunday marks the 14th match of the season and the 10th of 13 home battles this spring. Entering the weekend, the Terps are 5-4 at the friendly confines of the Tennis Center At College Park this season.

* After winning four matches in a row, Maryland has dropped four of its past five matches, including two straight, both to ACC teams.

* The 7-0 win over Coppin State earlier this season gave coach Laitta's squad six wins for the first time since 1998. Last season, the Terps notched four victories overall.

A LOOK AT NC STATE

* The Wolfpack travels to Charlottesville to face Virginia on Saturday before Sunday's contest with Maryland.

* NC State is 4-15 overall this season, coming off a 6-1 loss to Duke on Wednesday. They enter this weekend looking for their first conference victory in their fifth try.

* The Terrapins had a great showing against Wolfpack opponents this past fall at the NC State Invitational in Raleigh, winning two flight crowns. Freshman Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated NC State's Matt Lucas, 7-5, 6-3, on his way to the Flight A title at the three-day tournament. Freshman David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) beat Shane Sealy of the Wolfpack, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, en route to the championship in the Flight C bracket. Junior Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) beat Mike Carducci of NC State, 7-6 (9-7), 4-1, before falling in the finals of the Flight B draw.

* Last season in Raleigh, Maryland fell to NC State, 7-0.

RACKING UP THE WINS

* Causevic and Reichsfeld enter the weekend with eight wins a piece to lead the team in victories in singles play this season. Freshman Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) is only one behind with seven for the year.

* On the doubles end, Causevic and senior Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) lead Maryland with seven wins on the season at the No. 1 position. Maryland's three doubles teams have combined to win four matches in the ACC this season.
