Men's Tennis Falls Just Short Of Second ACC Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- In a battle that lasted nearly six hours, Virginia pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Maryland men's tennis team Tuesday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps fall to 7-8 overall for the season with a 1-6 mark in the ACC.
Virginia jumped on top early taking two of thee matches to capture the doubles point in three tightly contested bouts. The freshmen tandem of David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) defeated Jason Romesburg and Jay Curtis, 9-8, at the No. 2 doubles position. The top doubles team of freshman Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior Jonathan Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) lost a close battle to Virginia's Mike Duquette and Jonathan Chou, 8-6. The pair drops to 8-4 together on the season. Juniors Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) and Greg Chambers (Silver Spring, Md.) fell to Stephen Nolen and Greg Alpert of the Cavaliers, 8-5.
Causevic, who was honored earlier in the day as the Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week, downed Duquette at the No.1 singles position, 7-6 (5), 6-3, for his 10th win of the year. He is now 3-4 in the ACC this season at the No.1 spot. Chiu fell at the No. 2 spot to Nolen of UVA, 6-1, 6-0.
Virginia picked up two wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions to seal the win for the Cavaliers. Murchison lost to Romesburg, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot while Chambers fell to Chou, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot.
Even though the victory was already in the hands of Virginia, Coach Laitta's squad fought hard, picking up wins in the final two matches. Demers defeated Curtis of UVA in a third set tiebreaker, 7-6, 6-7 (7), 10-6, at the No. 4 position. After losing the first set, 6-7, Reichsfeld battled back to take the second frame, 7-6, knotting the match up at one set apiece. In a third-set tiebreaker, Reichsfeld earned the win, 12-10.
The Terrapins will return to the courts of the Tennis Center at College Park Saturday when they face off against North Carolina at 11 a.m.
