COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland men's tennis team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the ACC Championships held at the Millbrook Tennis Center, Thursday through Sunday. Head coach Jim Laitta and his team will play as the tournament's No. 9 seed, taking on No. 1 seed Duke, on Thursday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m.
Terps enter the ACC Championships 10-11 overall, and with a 0-7 record in the ACC.
On Sunday April 13, the Terps closed out their regular season against top ranked Clemson.
Both senior Chris Chiu and freshman Scott Peters, pushed their opponents to three sets. Although the Tigers won 7-0 on their way to their twenty-second win of the season, the Terps made a strong showing.
Sunday marked the closing of the Terps second season in the Tennis Center at College Park. Last season the Terps went 6-6 at the tennis center. This season the Terrapins hosted 14 home matches, winning nine of them at the tennis center.
The 7-0 sweep of Mount St. Mary's on April 9 gave Maryland its first ten-win season since 1992.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
Maryland will face Duke in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday. The Terps dropped a 6-1 decision to the Blue Devils on March 25 in Durham, N.C.
Notching his first career ACC victory against No. 9 Duke was freshman Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Ma.). He defeated Stefan Rozycki, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles position. Peters' singles' victory was the only point on the day for the Terrapins
The Blue Devils stand at 17-5, and are perfect in the ACC this season finishing at No. 1 with an 8-0 record.
To close out their regular season, Duke defeated Miami, 6-1, on Sunday April 13.
Duke is no stranger to ACC championships, having won four of the last five and eight of the last 10 ACC Tournament titles.
Head coach Jay Lapidus, in his 13th year, leads No. 9 Duke into action against Maryland riding a 10-game win streak, as well as its seventh consecutive perfect ACC regular season.
TERPS SWINGING AWAY
Four Terps enter the ACC tournament with ten-plus wins. Sophomore David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) started off the season with an 11-match win streak. He finished the regular season with 14 wins, finding his only ACC victory against NC State's Rehman Esmail. Fourteen wins is Reichsfeld's career high, as he ended his freshman season with 10 victories.
Leading the Terps during his four years as a Terp is senior co-captain Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.). He completed the regular season with a career best 11-10 record. Against NC State this year, Chiu notched his first career ACC victory against Will Shaw. Chiu is the team's career leader in victories.
Scott Peters finished his rookie season with an 11-9 record and an ACC victory already under his belt. He defeated Duke's Stefan Rozycki in straight sets in the March 25 match-up.
Pierre Rudder (Port of Spain, Trinidad) compiled a regular season record of 11-10 in his first season as a Terp. Rudder has competed in the No. 1 singles position six times for the Terrapins this season.
