Jay scored 310 points for the freshmen last year, just five points behind the team leader Charlie Blank. Jay was a quarterback on the football team at Rankin High and won All-State honors there in basketball while playing for Paul Birch. The left-hander captained his basketball team for two years and the football team for one year in high school. He was president of his senior high school class and member of the National Honor Society. As a freshman he saved his best game for the final game of the season, a 29 point performance against the Georgetown freshmen. He scored over 20 points in nine of the 16 freshman games, as they compiled a 1 2-4 record.
