COLLEGE PARK, Md. Freshman designated hitter Matt Hewitt hit a first-inning grand slam, propelling UMBC (17-20) to a 12-3 win over Maryland (18-22-1) in baseball action tonight at Shipley Field. The Retrievers' win was their first over the Terps since 1995.
UMBC already had a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hewitt came to bat with the bases loaded. He then belted a 3-2 pitch from Maryland starting pitcher Ray Wagner (Severna Park, Md.) over the left field fence, giving the Retrievers a 5-0 advantage before a single batter was retired.
Wagner left the game with the bases loaded again in the fourth inning, and UMBC scored four runs off of reliever Fred Weaver (Hummelstown, Pa.) to take a 9-0 lead. Weaver walked home the first two batters he faced, and freshman second baseman Tom Bednarcyk following up by drilling home two more runs on a single to left field.
Junior first baseman Scott Crandall added a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, extending the UMBC lead to 11-0.
Maryland finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior outfielder Larry Long (Columbia, Md.) led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. After senior outfielder Eric Beer (New City, N.Y.) singled and stole second base, senior shortstop Casey Trout (Gambrills, Md.) doubled him home to cut the deficit to 11-2.
Bednarcyk came through again for UMBC in the top of the eighth inning with a RBI double to extend the lead to 12-2. Maryland junior Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Md.), however, hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season to cut the lead to 12-3.
Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Lewis of UMBC improved his record to 3-1 on the season by holding the Terps to two runs on six hits through 4.1 innings of work. Relievers Eric Welter and Tom Bloom combined to hold Maryland to just one run on four hits over the remaining 4.2 innings.
Wagner took the loss for Maryland and his record fell to 2-2.
Maryland faces Coppin State tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Shipley Field. Each game will be seven innings.
