COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore outfielder Ryan Avila went 3-for-5 with a home run and freshman first baseman Greg Davies went 4-for-6 with a two-run home run, leading Towson (26-17) to a 13-10 win over Maryland tonight at Shipley Field.
Davies ignited an eight-run fourth inning with a two-run home run. His blast over the right field fence off of Maryland relief pitcher Jared Vogt (Pasadena, Md.) broke open a 1-1 tie and gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. In the same inning, Davies hit a two-out infield single, which scored a run to give Towson a 9-1 lead.
Maryland came back in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs. Junior designated hitter Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) hit his team-leading 11th home run of the year to lead off the inning. Junior outfielder Larry Long (Columbia, Md.) and senior outfielder Eric Beer (New City, N.Y.) each had a RBI single later in the inning.
Avila led off the top of the fifth inning by lining a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence to give the Tigers a 10-4 advantage. He went on to knock home the winning run on a fielders choice in the top of the sixth inning.
Maryland left the bases loaded four times in the game, including the bottom of the ninth inning when it trailed by three runs. For the game, the Terps left 18 men on base.
Freshman outfielder Matt Swope (New Carrolton, Md.) led the Terps by going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Junior reliever Wayne Feuerhead (2-2) got the win for Towson. Vogt (2-1) took the loss for Maryland.
