COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior third baseman Tim Pritchard hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth and junior pitcher Chris Fiora pitched two shutout innings to gain his third save of the season as Towson defeated Maryland, 5-4, at Shipley Field tonight.
Towson improved to 19-14 overall while Maryland fell to 18-21-1. It was the second consecutive victory for the Tigers and the second consecutive loss for the Terps.
Pritchard hit a 2-0 pitch from Terp starter Todd Ainsworth over the left field fence to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead. Pritchard's home run came with two outs and was the fifth run of the night surrendered by Ainsworth. Despite allowing only two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, Ainsworth was tagged with his fourth loss of the season. His record is now 0-4.
Pritchard was two-for-four with two runs scored and one RBI. He was the only Tiger batter with multiple hits. In addition to Pritchard, junior second baseman Jason Rummel, junior centerfielder Mike Dubansky, sophomore leftfielder Ryan Avila and freshman catcher Casey Stedham all contributed one RBI each.
Maryland scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the game interesting. Junior centerfielder Larry Long led off the inning with his second home run of the season to bring the Terps to within 5-2. Senior shortstop Casey Trout doubled with two outs and designated hitter Craig Munroe hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season to make the score 5-4.
