
Morris And USA Select Team Begin Training In Hawaii

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Maryland forward Terence Morris, a preseason All-American and a two-time nominee for the John Wooden Award, joins a select group of top U.S. college players this week in training with what will become the United States Olympic Team. Presently training in Maui, Morris will return to the Islands in November when he and the Terps open their 2000-01 season against Louisiville in the Maui Invitational.
The USA Men's Select Team, comprised of 12 of the nation's top collegians, began training in Maui on Aug. 28 in preparation for its Sept. 2 exhibition game against the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team at the University of Hawaii. The U.S. Select Team will train on Aug. 29 and 30 with a scrimmage each day versus the USA Men's Senior National Team and an additional practice from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Practice will also be held Thursday, Aug. 31 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The team will hold its final training session on Friday, Sept. 1 from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. before facing the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 1:00 p.m. in a nationally-televised contest on NBC. All practice sessions are be conducted at the Lahaina Civic Center and are closed to the public.
The USA is led by St. John's University (N.Y.) head mentor Mike Jarvis, who is joining USA Basketball as a head coach for the third time in his coaching career. Jarvis guided the 1993 USA Basketball Men's 22 & Under Team to an 8-0 record and a gold medal at the FIBA Under 22 World Championship in Spain and led the East Team to a silver medal and a 2-2 record at the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival. Joining Jarvis on the sidelines as the assistant coach of the Men's Select Team is University of Cincinnati head mentor Bob Huggins, The Sporting News' selection as 2000 National Coach of the Year. This will mark Huggins' second assignment with USA Basketball, as he was also an assistant for the gold-medal winning 1993 World University Games team that went 7-0.
Selections for the USA Men's Select Team were made by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by University of Virginia Athletic Director Terry Holland.
Named to the 2000 USA Men's Select Team were: Shane Battier (Duke / Birmingham, Mich.), Cory Bradford (Illinois / Memphis, Tenn.),Nick Collison (Kansas / Iowa Falls, Iowa), Joseph Forte (North Carolina / Greenbelt, Md.), Casey Jacobsen (Stanford / Glendora, Calif.),Ken Johnson (Ohio State / Detroit, Mich.), Terence Morris (Maryland / Frederick, Md.), Troy Murphy (Notre Dame / Morristown, N.J.), Jason Richardson (Michigan State / Saginaw, Mich.), Jamal Tinsley (Iowa State / Brooklyn, N.Y.), Michael Wright (Arizona / Chicago, Ill.) and Jason Williams (Duke / Plainfield, N.J.).
