COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland junior outfielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four runs scored to lead the Terrapins to a 12-4 victory over Towson Tuesday night in college baseball action at Shipley Field. The two-home run game for Whitmer was the second of his career as he helped guide the Terps to their first season sweep of Towson since the 1996 season.
The Terrapins scored in every inning except the second and the eighth while collecting 10 hits on the night.
Towson jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning when first baseman Mike Costello singled through the left side to score right fielder Joey Marcozzi.
Whitmer answered quickly for the Terps as he blasted his fifth home run of the season in the bottom half of the first to tie the contest at one.
After both teams failed to score in the second, the Terps reeled off 11 runs over the next five innings to put the game away.
The Terps scored two unearned runs in the third and added a single run in the fourth on Whitmer's second home run of the game to increase the Terrapin lead to 4-1.
In the fifth, the Terps scored once when sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and senior right fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) delivered two runs with a two-run single to right to make the score 7-1.
Towson got one run back in the top of the sixth before the Terps struck again with a pair in the home half of the sixth and three in the seventh to lead 12-2. Towson put up a fight in the ninth by scoring two runs, but it was enough as Maryland held on for a 12-4 victory.
Swope also had a big night for the winners as he drove in three runs and finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Maryland freshman starting pitcher Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) earned his second win of his career by pitching six strong innings. Clem (2-3) allowed just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts for the winners. Towson starter Brock Shaffer (0-1) lasted just 2.2 innings while surrendering three runs on two hits with four walks for the Tigers.
The win improved the Terps to 25-17 on the season while Towson dropped to 16-21-1. Maryland is back in action Wednesday vs. Coppin State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Shipley Field. Towson hosts George Washington tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Towson.
