COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terrapin sophomore point guard John Gilchrist, who ranks among the ACC's shooting, scoring, assists and steals leaders, earned the first all-conference honor of his career with his inclusion on the 2004 All-ACC third team.
Gilchrist has more than just replaced four-year starter Steve Blake - he's taken over. Currently, the second-year floor general leads the Terrapins in scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (4.8), and is second on the team in steals (48) and fourth in rebounding (4.4 rpg).
Gilchrist looks to become the first player to lead the Terps in both scoring and assists since Walt Williams in the 1990-91 season, and the first point guard to lead Maryland in both categories since John Lucas in the 1973-74 season. Lucas and Gilchrist are the only true point guards to ever lead the Terps in scoring for the season.
With the start of the conference season, Gilchrist has stepped up his play even further. He has reached new heights in several categories, and in conference games ranks seventh among ACC leaders in scoring, fifth in steals and assists, and sixth in field goal percentage.
Gilchrist's 33.7 minutes per game average ranks fourth among all ACC players.
Gilchrist has led the Terps in scoring in 10 games to date. He has recorded 22 games in double-figures this season, and six games of 20-plus points: Dec. 14 vs. Pepperdine (24), Jan. 14 vs. UNC (20), Jan. 17 at Georgia Tech (career-high 27), Feb. 4 at Virginia (26), Feb. 28 vs. Wake Forest (26), March 3 vs. NC State (21).
In addition, he totals five games of five or more assists, including a career-high nine at Virginia on Feb. 4.
He was named ACC Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Dec. 15 after leading the Terps in wins at No. 1 Florida and vs. Pepperdine.
The Terrapins take on Wake Forest at 9:30 on Friday in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2004 ACC Tournament.
