COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins rebounded from a tough weekend with strong offensive production in a 9-0 non-conference victory Tuesday evening at Shipley Field against the UMBC Retrievers. The Terps (19-11) won their fifth-straight non-conference matchup, while the Retrievers (8-13) fell in the teams' first game of a home-and-home series.
Freshman Tim Kearney picked up his first career win, pitching one scoreless inning in relief, while UMBC starter Will Delawter (0-2) took the loss. Kearney entered in the fifth inning with two outs as starter Brett Curll was lifted after 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering five hits while striking out four.
Maryland's first run of the day came in the second inning, when a bloop to right field by sophomore Dan Benick forced the first of four Retriever errors on the day. The play allowed junior Chad Durakis to score after he led off with a double off the right field fence.
An inning later, the leadoff hitting continued when junior Steve Braun hit his third career home run, and his second in four games, as he drove a Delawter pitch over the wall in left field. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Mike Murphy three batters later allowed senior Dan Melvin to extend the Terrapin lead to 3-0, after Melvin walked and recorded two stolen bases.
In the sixth inning, Maryland pounded the Retrievers with four runs, as it strategically bunted four times to open the inning. Murphy and classmate Gerry Spessard both notched bunt singles and advanced to second on throwing errors by third baseman Steve Russo, with Spessard scoring Murphy.
Durakis then reached on a two-base error by first baseman Steve Gale, scoring Spessard, and scored on double by Benick to extend the lead to 6-0. Braun added his second RBI of the day on a single through the left side, scoring pinch runner Nick Jowers and leaving the score 7-0.
The Terrapins added a pair of runs in the seventh inning, when Jowers singled to center field to score Melvin and pinch hitter Mike Moss, both of whom singled to reach base.
Five Maryland pitchers saw time on the mound, with freshman Ian Schwalenberg tossing 1.1 innings, while sophomore Brett Jones and junior Brad Taylor each allowed just one hit in an inning of work.
In the contest, every available Maryland position player recorded an at-bat, as the Terrapins extended their scoring margin over the past five non-conference games to 80-5.
Maryland hits the road tomorrow for a non-conference matchup at Towson, with first pitch coming at 3 p.m. The Terps then return home for a three-game weekend series against ACC foe Wake Forest at Shipley Field.
