
Vasquez To Join Venezuelan National Team

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland sophomore guard Greivis Vasquez (Caracas, Venezuela) has been named to the preliminary list of 15 players who will participate on the Venezuelan national team. The team will participate in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championships in Las Vegas from August 22 to September 2.
Under the direction of head coach Nestor Salazar, the Venezuelan squad will travel to face teams from New Zealand, China and Spain over the next month in preparation for the Championships in August. They will also face a team of all-stars from the NBA Developmental League.
Vasquez earned ACC All-Freshman honorable mention in 2006-07. He finished the year with 149 assists, the third-highest assist total among freshmen in the history of the school. Vasquez ranked sixth in the ACC in assists (4.62) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71). He averaged 9.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season. Vasquez narrowly missed the first triple-double at Maryland in 20 years as he posted 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds at Duke on February 28.
The Venezuelan national team will begin the tournament in the preliminary round as part of Group B with Brazil, Canada, The Virgin Islands and the United States. The Venezuelan national team will face Team USA in its first game of the tournament on August 22. Group A will consist of Argentina, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.
