Storyline
Maryland hits the midway point of its five-game, month-long homestand with a non-conference outing against NJIT. The game will be the first meeting ever in men's basketball between the two schools.
The Terrapins are coming off a 10-day break for Finals Week, playing for the first time since a 79-75 loss to Boston College. After the game with the Highlanders, Maryland will be off for seven days before playing host to North Florida, then has a six-day break before hosting Colgate. Maryland's next road game will be on Jan. 9, 2011 at Duke.
Sophomore Jordan Williams continued his amazing play with a 27-point, 13-rebound performance against Boston College. The double-double was his ninth of the season and his fifth straight, matching the five-game streak he previously put together over two seasons. Before the overlapping streak, the last time a Maryland player had this type of streak was in 1995 when Joe Smith had seven double-doubles.
Senior forward Dino Gregory matched his career-high with 14 points against the Eagles, going 6-for-8 from the floor. Gregory, who leads the Terrapins in blocks (19) and steals (14), is averaging 8.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over the last seven games. He had three blocks against Boston College.
Freshman guard Terrell Stoglin has scored in double figures in four straight games, raising his scoring average to 11.0 ppg. Over that four-game stretch, Stoglin is scoring at a 14.5 ppg pace.
Over the last four games, senior guard Adrian Bowie has 26 assists and only eight turnovers (3.25 ratio). That includes a 7-assist, 0-turnover performance against Boston College... Bowie is now 4th in the ACC in assists (4.3 per game) and 9th in the league in assist-turnover ratio (1.68). Bowie is 1 steal away from reaching 100 in his career and has at least one steal in nine of the Terrapins' 11 games this year.
Scouting the Highlanders
NJIT is 2-6 this season and has yet to win on the road, most recently having lost at Seton Hall 68-45 on Sunday. A member of the Great West Conference, the Highlanders have wins over NYU-Poly and St. Joseph's on their resume.
Senior guard Jheryl Wilson leads a balanced scoring attack, averaging 11.1 ppg while coming in second on the team in rebounding with 5.1 pg. Junior guard/forward Isaiah Wilkerson leads the team in rebounding with 5.5 pg and is second behind Wilson in scoring at 10.0 pg. He just missed a double-double against Seton Hall, chipping in 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Sophomore guard Chris Flores, a preseason All-GWC first team selection, is averaging 9.8 ppg and leads the team with 10 steals. Two Maryland natives - sophomore guard PJ Miller (Fort Washington) and freshman forward Dytanta Johnson (Waldorf) round out the starting lineup for NJIT.
The Highlanders, who previously competed in NCAA Division II, officially gained D-I membership in all sports prior to the 2009-10 season. NJIT is 0-2 all-time against ACC schools and 0-12 against schools from BCS conferences.
