Storyline
Maryland plays the second game in a week-long road stretch in a Wednesday night game at Wake Forest. The Terrapins are seeking their first victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference before heading to 7th-ranked Villanova on Saturday.
Four of Maryland's five losses this season have been to teams ranked in the preseason Top 25 and all have come by single digits. In a 71-64 loss at Duke on Sunday, the Terrapins led 38-32 to put the Blue Devils down for six points for the first time this season.
Maryland has started league play 0-2 for only the 8th time in Gary Williams 22 seasons in College Park. In four of those seasons, the Terrapins have come back to claim an invitation to the NCAA Tournament and five times, Maryland finished league play with at least eight wins.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams continues to have one of the best seasons in Terrapin history. He had 23 points and 13 rebounds on Sunday night at Duke. It was his 13th double-double of the season and the ninth straight. Williams' streak has surpassed the seven straight of Joe Smith in the 1994-95 season and is short only of the 12 straight double-doubles posted by current ESPN analyst Len Elmore in the 1973-74 season.
The Terrapins have played outstanding defense in a recent stretch, holding the Blue Devils to a .403 shooting percentage from the floor on Sunday. Maryland now ranks 8th in the nation in FG percentage defense with a .370 mark.
Scouting the Demon Deacons
Wake Forest enters Wednesday's matchup 7-9 on the season and having dropped five of the past six. Most recently, the Demon Deacons fell in their ACC opener at NC State, 90-69.
Wake has used seven different starting lineups this season but has stuck with one consisting of guards C.J. Harris and Gary Clark, forwards Ari Stewart and Travis McKie and center Carson Desrosiers the last three games.
Clark, a senior connecting at a .636 mark from 3-point range, is the lone upperclassman in the starting lineup. Four of Wake's starters are averaging double-figure scoring (Desrosiers is the exception).
Freshman guard J.T. Terrell has come off the bench the last seven games and his 13.6 ppg leads the team. Terrell is hitting 40.8 percent of his 3-point attempts and as a team Wake ranks third in 3-point FG percentage (.393) in the ACC. Ty Walker, a 7-foot junior center, leads the conference in blocks (3.4 pg).
The Demon Deacons lead the league in free throw percentage (.771) but have struggled in the turnover department, ranking last in the league in TO margin (minus-3 pg). Their defense is allowing a league-high 74.8 ppg.
Maryland and Wake Forest have two common opponents thus far in Elon and UNC Greensboro. The Terps won those games by an average of 31 points, while the Demon Deacons had a 10.5 average margin of victory.
