Storyline
Maryland ends the month of January with an important road test at Georgia Tech as part of Fox SportsNet's Sunday Night Hoops package. The meeting with the Yellow Jackets is the only one of the regular season this year between the schools.
The Terrapins have climbed back to .500 in the ACC after starting league play 0-2. A victory by Maryland would improve it to 3-1 on the road in league games and the winner ties Boston College for fourth in the league standings. Maryland, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Virginia Tech come into the weekend tied with 3-3 marks in league games. The Yellow Jackets are tough at home, though, going 3-0 in Alexander and 0-3 in the league on the road.
Senior guard Adrian Bowie scored 17 of his season-high 22 points in the second half in Maryland's 66-42 win at Virginia on Thursday night. Bowie had seven points in a crucial 9-0 run early in the second half that gave the Terrapins control of the game. Both Bowie and Cliff Tucker (13 at UVa) have scored in double figures in eight of their last nine games.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams had his streak of double-doubles snapped at Virginia by a collapsing defense. He finished with four points and six boards against the Wahoos, but foiled the double- and triple-teaming by recording a career-high three assists. He still leads the ACC and is 4th in the nation in rebounding (11.8 rpg) and is tied for the national lead in double-doubles with 17.
After holding Virginia to just 16 FGs and .333 shooting from the floor, Maryland is back among the top-10 defenses in the nation in FG percentage... The Terps are holding opponents to .381, 9th in the NCAA.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech is coming off a 72-57 victory over Virginia Tech and has won its three ACC home games by a combined 70 points, an average margin of victory of 23.3... The Yellow Jackets are 10-9 on the season, but have an 8-2 record at Alexander Memorial Coliseum... They beat North Carolina by 20 on Jan. 16, Wake Forest by 35 on Jan. 19 and after a road loss to Virginia, defeated the Hokies by 15...
In the win over Virginia Tech, guard/forward Brian Oliver came off the bench to score 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range... The sophomore chipped in three assists and didn't commit a turnover...
Iman Shumpert, meanwhile, had a triple-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists... The junior guard also added seven steals in the win and leads the ACC with 2.7 spg... Shumpert, at 6-foot-5, also leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per game...
Glen Rice Jr. and Maurice Miller accompany Shumpert in the backcourt... Rice is second on the team in scoring (12.4 pg), while Miller leads the team in free throw percentage (.923)... Redshirt freshman Kammeon Holsey has started seven of the last eight games at forward, while fellow redshirt freshman Daniel Miller has started every game at center and ranks fifth in the ACC in blocks (1.9 bpg).
Tech has been somewhat of a different team at home than it has on the road, especially on the defensive side of the ball... In 10 home games, opponents are shooting just .370 against the Yellow Jackets, while turning it over 18.4 times per game... When Tech is on the road, opponents are shooting .525 from the field... The Jackets also average 5.9 blocks per game at home as opposed to just 2.2 on the road.
Tough Schedule Once Again
Once again in 2010-11, Maryland plays one of the top schedules in the nation...
Based on the current rankings in the Associated Press poll, the Terrapins will face three teams in the top eight (#2 Pittsburgh, #3 Duke, #8 Villanova), five teams in the Top 25 and will play eight teams that received votes in this week's AP ranking.
